Hello! I have recently found out I am pregnant, I have been losing weight but I am still over 30 BMI, I am yet to have my first doctors appointment but I am curious to see if anyone has been able to reduce their BMI to a healthy number whilst pregnant? I am worried about risks ! TIA x

I think the general advice is not to aim to lose weight but to try and avoid gaining weight - or at least only gain a little bit. Then once the baby is born you weigh less than you started off with.

Slimming world is usually recommended for pregnant women with high BMI. Lots of gentle exercise when you can and walking. Eat a healthy balanced diet and try to avoid gaining weight more than losing it. Good Luck

I called my midwife as I was worried, she recommended slimming world. They just make some changes to the amount of calcium you can have each day and you can only lose a certain amount each week 😊

Slimming world work with the RCM so can provide a ‘pregnancy safe’ program if you wanted to do that. However there is no reason that you can’t do a sensible calorie controlled diet of your own. Eating lower GI foods now is also a good idea as you are more likely to develop gestational diabetes with a raised BMI and it may help to manage weight gain.

Exercise is great too. If you’re used to running, going to the gym etc. Keep doing it! If not, start walking and add in some yoga or at home workouts. Swimming is great too.

Try to keep active and make sure you are eating a healthy balanced diet. You’re likely to either lose weight or not put very much on. I wouldn’t bother with slimming world, I went to one meeting and they just said so much stuff that made no sense I never bothered again
