Blood found in urine test/cramping. Baby is ok for now? Scared and need advice....

This is probably going to sound silly, but I am 10 weeks 4 days, and yesterday after lunch I experienced some intense cramping/gastro issues. I was having a tough time determining if it was food-related or period-like bad cramping (as it was fairly low) that signals a miscarriage, so my doctor advised me to go to the ER.

At the hospital, they tested my urine for infection and asked me repeatedly if I had experienced bleeding. At this point, I had been there for 5 hours and the cramping had ended a few hours before, lasting about two hours total. I haven't had any bleeding that I can see, but my urine test showed blood in the urine. The doctor said it isn't super alarming but did an ultrasound at my request. The baby looked good with a strong heartbeat, but the doctor made me nervous by saying that it was "only a snapchat of that day" and that I would have to wait and see if things stay positive until my 12 week.

Ultimately the doctor wasn't too concerned but she stressed me out by saying that. I don't feel reassured by the scan, even though it was a few hours after the cramping ended and the blood in my urine is scary. I still see no blood when I go to the bathroom and haven't had cramping at all since, but I can't help but feel like it is impossible to relax for the next two weeks. I feel like the doctor made me think this was the start of something bad, even though I feel perfectly fine today (minus regular pg symptoms).

Feel free to tell me if I'm being ridiculous. I am going out of my mind.....

Hi - I have had water infection pretty much since I found out I was pregnant and now I'm nearly 9 weeks. I have blood in my urine when they test and the water infection can cause an ache low down on the tummy like cramps. Do you think that you could have a water infection and now realise?

Eternal, is that the same as a UTI? My doctor thought I might have a UTI but my test came back all clear. She claims that I had no infection, just a little bit of blood in the urine.

Anything is possible at this point though!

Yeh, it's the same as a UTI. I can't shake it as the antibiotics you can have when pregnant are rubbish! Seems unlikely you have it though if they've tested.

I would try not to worry though as when they told me I had blood in my urine they said they weren't worried about it affecting the pregnancy and I felt reassured.

I thought this pregnancy thing would be all rainbows and sparkles but turns out it's a constant cause of overthinking!

As far as I know blood in your urine has nothing to do with a miscarriage. I‘ve had a trace of blood in my urine several times during pregnancy and a bit of antibiotics always sorts it out. Sounds like you have a UTI but if the rest of your urine test was clear then it’s obv not showing up and they won’t prescribe you antibiotics (for some reason, some types of UTI-causing bacteria don’t show up on standard urine tests). Drink lots of water to flush it out and I’m sure you’ll be all clear when you have your next one.
Even without the blood in your urine, cramping in early pregnancy is totally normal (and throughout actually).
There was absolutely no need for the doctor to say that to you though, if the scan looked good at 10 weeks with a visible heartbeat then there was no reason for them to scare you unnecessarily by even mentioning what ‘could’ happen between now and the 12 week scan (aka insinuating miscarriage) just because of a bit of blood in your urine. They should know better than that!

Eternal, I may visit my doctor next week to have them test again. I do feel a little crampy after peeing so maybe they missed something?

Bettie thank you so much for your response! It made me feel like I can breathe a little easier.

@courtney455 I had the same thing a couple of weeks ago, had a week of antibiotics for a UTI, then they did another urine test which came back negative for infection even though I was still getting some discomfort in my bladder. So I just drank loads of water and cranberry juice for a few days to clear out the last of the infection. As I said, some of these standard urine tests don’t pick up certain bacteria. But I couldn’t be bothered to go back to my docs and go through it all again so I just drank it away lol. But you should still go again if you are still feeling pain/discomfort so they can send a sample to the lab for more effective testing. And then hopefully prescribe antibiotics. Good luck with everything, I’m sure it’ll all be fine with you and your bubba :)
