Worried after early scan at EPU

Had some pain in my right side and was seen by EPU today. Had some pain and was sent for an early scan and I’m so worried. I’m measuring between 5 and half to 6 weeks (as expected) and they found a yolk sak and a baby however she told me that the heartbeat is lower than they’d like to see, she said it could all be fine or I could MC.. They want me back for another scan in 2 weeks and I’m booked in for 6th October. I’m petrified 😩

Anyone had similar?

Hi

If your measuring between 5.5- 6 weeks, it could be that the heart is only just started beating (or active to see on the ultrasound)

Parkandride · 22/09/2020 17:03

Often you can't even see the heartbeat until after 6 weeks so I'd try not to worry, I know that's easier said than done Flowers

Hey! I'm not as far gone as you but I'm worried too! I had really bad pain in my side so I went to A&E, they told me I was pregnant! Had a scan but i was only around 4 weeks then so they could only see a sac. I have another scan next week. But your not alone with the pain in the side. It's really worrying :( I hope everything goes ok for you xx
Littlebee1990 · 22/09/2020 17:44

Thanks ladies, I guess nobody can offer any reassurance other than for me to stay calm and stress free until the scan on the 6th. I had an early scan booked for the 3rd at a private clinic.. don’t know if to go to that so at least if it’s bad news my partner will be there with me and I can cancel the EPU one for someone else.

Had a loss in June and so worried it’s happening again.

So sorry you are going through this. Fingers crossed for you.

With the private scan - in my experience I still needed to see the EPU because the private scan does not offer further management (eg even if everything is ok there might still be something that needs more monitoring/support or you might need medical support from an EPU if it is bad news).

I have also found that my nhs EPU does not accept private scans as ‘real’ which caused some amount of distress for me. I think this is set by individual hospital policy, so might not be the case for you. It’s worth being aware of though.

I would say having your partner there is really helpful, for both of you.

Sorry not to have answers, but I thought the information would be helpful.

@Littlebee1990 so sorry to hear you're being put through it. Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🤞

Littlebee1990 · 22/09/2020 18:36

Honestly have no idea how I’m gonna get through the next few weeks like a normal human! X

This early pregnancy thing is a bit shit, isn’t it @Littlebee1990

I would definitely do the private scan so oh can be with you, & if it were to be bad news, you’re not on your own, and get a bit of time to process it.

I know it’s easy for me to say, but try and focus on the fact that there IS a heartbeat, at such an early Stage too... I’d imagine it would be slow if it had just started.

One day a time, lovely ❤️

Littlebee1990 · 22/09/2020 19:13

Thanks @Sansa87 .. it’s so shit! I’ve told my mum because I need her support but it’s not the way I imagined telling her, that makes me so sad too.

I’m going to do the private scan so my partner is there, I’ll prepare for the worst but hope for the best

Hi @Littlebee1990. Just wanted to say I absolutely share your pain on this one! Think we're in similar positions - both had a loss a few months back, both about 5 and half weeks etc. I've got a scan at EPU tomorrow AM because I had some bleeding on Saturday and all sorts of weird and wonderful pains since (although really hard for me to work out which are anxiety driven i.e. does my shoulder just hurt because tense/worried it would because of fear of ectopic?)

I've already been warned that I might not see much tomorrow to reassure me so may well be in similar boat to you and am certainly very anxious right now. I also told my mum at the weekend but similarly had to say "I'm pregnant, but don't get excited as think things are going wrong" so again totally sympathise with that not feeling at all like how you imagined letting on!

So not much advice, but lots of sympathy/empathy! Hopefully all works out for both of us. Sending hugs your way xxx

Littlebee1990 · 22/09/2020 20:02

@Sophi123 Thinking of you and thank you so much for your lovely reply. My previous thoughts and dreams of a happy pregnancy and smiling are now just full of tears and fear.
Please let me know how tomorrow goes? X

Ahh spent all day crying so far, I’m so worried about Tuesday. I can’t believe I’m potentially going to be having my 2nd loss in 4 months. Feel like we’re never going to be parents 💔😢

I still can’t get over them saying that to you @Littlebee1990 as far as I knew, 5.5 wasn’t even supposed to have a heart beat so that would suggest that. It had literally just started.

Don’t know why they didn’t say they couldn’t quite be sure of dates just yet and want to rescan at a later date.

Just doesn’t make sense, I’m so sorry

Littlebee1990 · 25/09/2020 11:35

@Sansa87 That’s what I can’t make sense of either! She pulled the screen to me and was like “here’s your sack, here’s the bubba etc and that flicker is a heartbeat” .. then started talking to her colleague and she said hmmm that heartbeats lower than we would want to see, we need to get you back in 2 weeks to look at viability” .. wish I’d asked more questions!! Xx

Mishmased · 25/09/2020 12:55

@Littlebee1990 I know it is worrying but there's literally nothing you can do about it. I'm so sorry especially in your first pregnancy as well. Hopefully it will turn out fine and as others said the heartbeat will get stronger. I'm a week behind and hoping the next three weeks fly by. I have accepted there's nothing I can do so take each day as it comes. Sending lots of good wishes.xx

Littlebee1990 · 29/09/2020 08:54

Hi ladies, update as promised after my visit to EPU last week when they said heartbeat was low and to expect the worst and go back in 2 weeks. Thank you for all your good wishes and prayers.. today at our private scan bubbas heartbeat is now 129bpm and I’m measuring at 6+4.. we’re not out the woods yet as it’s still very very early days and I have a haematoma to the side of bubba which is a risk but I have to rest, take it easy and keep hopeful everyday. She said as of today everything looks good and how it should and we saw bubbas heartbeat flickering away. We can’t quite believe it. ❤️😢

SarahTTC2020 · 29/09/2020 13:19

Thank you all so so so much xxx

Hey @Littlebee1990 how're you keeping? Found out I have the same Hematoma as well, so thought I'd hear how things are going with you.

Littlebee1990 · 15/10/2020 09:17

Hey @Mishmased lovely to hear from you :) At my scan last week the nurse said it’s shrunk and should be gone by 12 weeks! I’m 9+3 today and 2 weeks today until the “12 week scan”. How are you? How far along are you also? Xx

OP posts:
Mishmased · 15/10/2020 10:03

Thanks for the reply @Littlebee1990 I'm currently 7+2 and just seem to be in constant pain. Not howling pain but just background pain. Spotting on and off. I've another appointment at 12 weeks but epu said to call if there's more bleed but everything should be fine. So much drama with this pregnancy, did not have any of this before. Thanks again.x
