Electrolytes during pregnancy - besides gatorade

Hey all,

So we are finally in the beginning of the second trimester (yay!). On my last ultrasound appointment my OB told me that I need to start taking electrolytes to help with muscle cramping. She advised me to take either gatorade, powerade, or pedialyte.. but Gatorade and Powerade have SO much sugar! and I can't do the chalky flavor of pedialyte. So I was wondering, do any of you ladies have other ideas of electrolytes? I have seen an electrolyte tablets and powder. What did you ladies take?

Any thoughts??

Do they not do sugar free versions of those electrolyte drinks. I'm sure they do in the UK

Kiyentai · 19/09/2020 20:47

They do, but then it has less of the electrolytes in it and I would have to drink twice as much to get the same benefit, which I have not drunk gatorade in years and it has artificial sweeteners, which is just as bad. I will also say that I have no craved sweets at all during this pregnancy, and the baby is not a fan of sugar. I never liked powerade either.

Are bananas not supposed to help with leg cramps

blodyn91 · 19/09/2020 20:51

@Kiyentai I suffer badly with cramps when I exercise 🙈 SIS (science in sport) do zero sugar electrolytes tables, decathalon also have their own brand. Alternatively make your own, so I put a pinch of salt in a pint of water with some squash.

I'd just try and get them through food and other drinks not filled with sugar

dementedpixie · 19/09/2020 20:52

The tablets are full of salt/sodium

Nunn tablets were my 'go to' in pregnancy

Aye - these are electrolytes. Required , though in moderation! I like HI5 tabs for sports events - anticipating having a few inside for labour. Low sugar and I like the flavours :)

I used the sis rehydration tablets when I felt like I was getting dehydrated.
