I’m only 3 + 6, so vv early days, but I had a MC in July and I’m worried about whether breastfeeding is a risk factor for another MC. I’m still BF my just-turned-two year old DS in the morning and before bed, and he’s just started waking up through the night again to feed Hmm

Can anyone give me some honest advice about whether breastfeeding during pregnancy could cause problems with the viability of the pregnancy? I started progesterone (400mg at night) at the weekend so hoping that will help.

Congratulations OP, really hope this is the ‘one’ you have been waiting for. I have a history of miscarriage and had this concern too. However I couldn’t find anything in the literature to suggest any link between breastfeeding in pregnancy and miscarriage. Anecdotal purely, but I breastfed my 2 year old throughout my subsequent pregnancy and aside from a decline in my milk supply from 16 weeks there were no noticeable affects. I am currently pregnant again (first trimester) and breastfeeding a 2 year old again. Obviously that is just anecdotal but I have a wide circle of friends who have breastfed throughout pregnancy without issue. I am sure if you phoned the La Leche League they would be similarly reassuring.

Hope the progesterone does the trick. PM if you need to ask anything.

I had three miscarriages whilst breastfeeding my daughter, but none of them were related to breastfeeding. I then fell pregnant again and have just given birth to a healthy boy, and continued to breastfeed throughout pregnancy. There’s no rhyme or reason to these things. Wishing you luck.

Thanks both, this is reassuring. I’m kind of hoping that he weans when my milk starts to dry up or taste different

I breastfed my 2 year old all through my pregnancy. I had issues regarding my pregnancy which ment I could go into early labour. My consultant said i could continue as the risk was minimal.

I've breastfed through 2 pregnancies with no problems. My gynecologist was happy for me to carry on as long as I wanted to. I think if you've been advised not to have sex during pregnancy, you should probably ask about breastfeeding too, because of something I only very vaguely remember now about contractions, but there's no inherent link between breastfeeding and miscarriage. (I have had a miscarriage, too, and specifically asked about this because I was worried I'd caused it. Apparently not.)
