16 week scan to find out sex

How reliable is having a private scan at 16 weeks to find out the sex of a baby. We are currently 13 weeks 2 days. We want to find out the sex together as my husband can’t come to the 20 week scan. I’m not sure my patience will hold out much later than 16 weeks but don’t want to have it that early if it’s not overly reliable

It really depends on the expertise of the sonographer - I've read loads of stories where the sex of the Babb was given wrongly when it was that early

I had mine confirmed by blood test as part of the NIPT test

BingoGo · 29/08/2020 19:23

I had mine done at 15 weeks, in Denmark it's normal to do it from 14 weeks. Just make sure the place you're using has good reviews

I had a private scan (for the same reason as you OP) at 16+6weeks and baby kept crossing their legs. Sonographer got a brief glimpse, but said she couldn't be 99% (they don't promise 100% accuracy) and said she was 75% sure it was a girl. Giving the sex was an extra fee on top of scan price so they didn't charge that. 20 week scan confirmed my baby is a girl!

Crystal87 · 29/08/2020 19:31

Yes I had mine done at exactly 16 weeks with my youngest and he was very clearly a boy.

Loz1093 · 29/08/2020 19:40

I had a scan at 16 weeks,
But baby had legs crossed. Had it rebooked for 18 weeks and was clear as day... all that being said the sonographer at 16 week scan suggest we rebooked but thought she could see it was a girl, to which she was right anyway! 👶🏼

I had one yesterday at BabyBond, I'm 16+4. During the scan, they told me they were 90% sure it was a girl but luckily had a really good sonographer who sent me for a 10 min walk and a sweet drink to come back just to be certain only to then see it was a boy clear as day!! Turns out the umbilical cord was in between his little legs blocking the view! But I guess that doesn't matter if I was 16 or 20 weeks, there can always be an element of doubt...

I had one and they showed you the parts in 3D which I must say is pretty reliable. Having seen both a boy/girl during these scans the difference is quite noticeable even for the untrained eye

MrsJamieLWeir · 30/08/2020 19:07

I had one 16+1 with window to womb and they said boy, it was pretty clear why they said that. Just had my 20 weeks scab and confirm they were in fact correct! I was like you, too impatient to wait to 20 weeks!

dollypops15 · 30/08/2020 19:24

I gender scans at 16 weeks with both my 2 youngest. One they seen said away a girl and was correct. The second took ages, she wouldn't uncross her legs. But they got it in the end after 45 minutes and were right again

ShinyGreenElephant · 30/08/2020 19:26

I had both mine around 15 weeks, both correct. This one is booked for 15+5, can't wait! Even going to do the sad balloon popping thing as the kids can't come to the scan and I want them to be involved

KB13 · 30/08/2020 19:30

That’s good to hear. I have informed my husband that we are off for our scan at 16 weeks on the dot. I’m convinced it’s a boy as the skull is so different to my other 2 daughters 12 weeks scans. So I only have 2 and a half weeks to go until we can find out either way 😁

@ShinyGreenElephant we are doing the same. We are just going to do it with myself, my husband and our 2 daughters. Just to make it a little special for them x

Worked out perfectly for us. Got it done privately at 16 weeks. When the sonographer told us the gender for the first time and congratulated us, I asked him point blank, 'how sure are you?' And he patiently said 'I am 99.9% sure.' And then he showed us on the screen why he said that. He was right from the start even though I was doubting it and felt elated when the 20 weeks scan confirmed it.

AldiAisleofCrap · 30/08/2020 23:45

I had a private scan with my twin girls and the sez was correct at 16 weeks.

AldiAisleofCrap · 30/08/2020 23:46

Sex!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 30/08/2020 23:47

I had one a few weeks ago. I was 16+2. At first babies legs were crossed so they couldn't see at all. I had to go for a walk and when I came back they said it was very clearly a girl.

Highheels87 · 31/08/2020 06:38

15+1 the sonographer checked, double checked and triple checked and said she needs to be really sure before tells us. Told us then showed us what we were looking for

Pearsapiece · 31/08/2020 06:43

We had ours at 16 weeks. Sonographer was great. Spent ages looking, making sure she had checked over and over then told us girl and explained what she was looking for to see that.
They are often more reliable as all they are looking for is the sex where as at the 20 week scan they are checking a lot of other and more important things and the sex is just a quick check at the end

ShinyGreenElephant · 31/08/2020 08:13

@KB13 hope your girls enjoy it! We've got 4 so there will be a fight to the death over who gets to pop it ha

GirlCalledJames · 31/08/2020 08:19

Both of mine were accurate at 12 weeks (not in UK and they seem happy to say with a caveat here). Also we had NIPT so we knew for sure a few days later.
You could find out now with a blood test, just saying...
