Hi I'm 23 and currently 18+4 week pregnant with my 3rd baby, I also have a just turned 1 year old and a just turned 2 year old and have also recently split up with my partner so I'm super stressed atm! I got my bloods taken a bit late for screening and recieved a phone call yesterday to say there is a 1 in 98 chance my baby could have down syndrome which was a massive shock as 12 week scan seemed fine and so did my private 16 week scan, so I'm just wondering has anyone else gone through this and how did it go I'm so numb and petrified! I'm also getting booked for amniocentesis. Any advice/ personal stories will be greatly appreciated Flowers

My DD was a 1 in 8 chance. She wasn't. I think the stats help you prepare for the what ifs. Talk it over with your Dr/health professional. Try not to Google!

I think your amniocentesis is the best way forward. We were told 1 in 300 chance. All scans were good but then we went for a private 4d scan and they told me to get an amniocentesis due to the bridge of the nose measurements. It all turned out fine for us but a friend of mine recently had an amnio after a 1 in 40 and it confirmed Down's syndrome. I would book in and then you will know and can make your decision based on that. Thanks

Just a little perspective as advice baby has a 99% chance of NOT having downs. 1 in 98 is a 1.02% chance of having downs.

Thank you for the replies! I'm such a bad worrier as it is and I've had family try to persuade me not to go for the amniocentesis due to the chance of miscarriage but I have to do the test for my own mind otherwise I will just panic and stress for the next 4 month, I'm good at making myself believe the worst of everything, I just can't get it out of my head, struggled with sleep last night and struggling with food I'm trying to keep busy but knowing I'm on my own with this makes me sick to the stomach Sad

Have you thought of doing the Harmony blood test ? It tests fragments of baby’s DNA which is within your blood stream
It carries no risk. You currently pay for it privately.

With my first child I have a 1 in 110 chance of baby having Down syndrome. We went to the fetal medical centre in London for a specialist scan and the harmony test. Results came back as very low risk. And baby was born healthy and did not have Down syndrome
You don’t need to go do london for the harmony test but can recommend that clinic
Hope this helps. X

1 in 98 is not particularly high risk, although i know it must have felt like a shock. Where I am they don't tell you your risk most of the time, is it is less than 1 in 150 you are considered low risk and you don't even get a number. Just to give it some context. Previous posters have given good advice on what your next steps could be. The main question is what would you do if you knew the answer 100% and it was downs, would you continue the pregnancy or would you just like to be prepared so you could plan? Remember at 1 in 98 it is just over 1% chance so the odds are in your favour x

We had a 1 in 85 risk and had the CVS (similar to amnio do this one earlier). DD didn't have any issues. I've become quite sceptical about the odds they give now and think I will go private harmony test next time. I was the same and wanted to know so choose what you want to do.
