Glucose screening (not full GTT)

A lot of Trusts are running a more basic glucose screening test when you drink the sugar solution at home then have your blood taken an hour later.

I’ve had my results through and I’m trying to establish what the normal glucose range is for that type of test. Does anyone know?

I’ve read that anything above 7.8 is abnormal for the full GTT (fasting and bloods taken 2 hours apart) but I can’t find the range for the more basic glucose screening test.

Above 7.8 means higher risk of GDM and usually you’d get a full GTT to check. Above 11 is diagnostic and you’d be treated as GDM.

Thank you. I thought the 7.8 reading only applied to the full GTT after waiting 2 hours? I thought the more basic screening might have different parameters?

It’s a screening cut off - and where I am the GTT diagnostic cut off isnt 7.8 anyway, varies around the world.
If you google “polycose test” you should be able to bring up some references :)

Hmm it has occurred to me that the polycose test cut off could be different as well - I don’t think so as haven’t heard of that but totally possible!
Usually if you have your results it should come with a little blurb saying “normal result” or “possible diabetes recommend x y z”

Thanks, that’s helpful. Looking up polycose test also brings up Oral Glucose Challenge Test which sounds like the test I had. My reading was only 0.1 over the 7.8 cut off. Annoyingly my results didn’t come with any explanation, just a glucose reading and an invite for a full GTT. I only found out about the 7.8 from google.
