Worried about lack of weight gain at 24 weeks

I should start by saying I'm in the high BMI category and had a BMI of 35 when I got pregnant, so the guidance is to put on between 11 and 25 lbs total. I'm now 24 weeks and have only gained 3.5lbs despite having a big bump and needing maternity trousers. I had a scan at 22 weeks and the baby is measuring fine, I'm just worried that it seems to not be very much and the calculators all say I should have put on about 7-8lbs by now.

My BMI is 34 and I first got weighed at 12 week scan because of Covid- id lost 8lbs at that point. I think that if you're heavier because of behaviour (as in I used to eat too much crap and drink too much alcohol) before pregnancy, you're likely to change your behaviour during pregnancy and will likely not gain as much. Your midwife will tell you if they're worried

Maybe you are eating less, different foods?
Trey not to worry and to your benefit, if your bmi is high.
Weirdly enough ( when I had my sons nearly 30 and 32), I thought you had to put on 28lbs, I had to eat too much, if only I had known

Most weight goes on in the third trimester as the baby grows.

If the baby is measuring fine and you're well, it's no bad thing not to have gained too much by 24 weeks tbh. .

I put on 8lb my entire pregnancy and lost 2 stone when I had him. I was very sick and had no appetite. As long as Baby is growing then all is fine!

fmlfmlfmlfm · 17/08/2020 09:13

My baby was also 9lb 91/2

Thanks for the quick replies! I actually haven't changed my diet at all, that's the confusing part. I eat mostly things we make at home as I have a few food allergies (wheat, dairy, alliums, soy). I also have a thyroid condition and my weight gain was a side effect that stopped when I got the right level of meds but never went back down to what it was before I got sick. I'm doing less exercise than I was but my scales say I haven't lost any muscle.

I haven't been weighed since by booking in appointment at 12 weeks and I hadn't put on any weight at all at that stage. How often are you meant to be weighed?

I had a similar BMI during my pregnancy and only gained four pounds by the end, DD was 6 pounds so I suppose I technically lost weight! I wouldn’t worry x

@christinarossetti19 @fmlfmlfmlfm That's really reassuring, thanks Smile

Try not to worry about it really. It's okay to gain less weight than in norma if you eat regularly and properly. Just control eating 3 times a day healthy products. It's gonna be fine in some time.

Rosalie009 · 17/08/2020 10:21

I was exactly the same weight the day before I gave birth that I was at my booking in appointment. A week after I gave birth I was 2.5 stone lighter than pre-pregnancy. I had a BMI of 31 when I got pregnant. I didn’t have any sickness but I think towards the end I did lose my appetite a bit, still ate three meals a day though! Don’t really know what happened with me but baby turned out a healthy 7lbs a couple of weeks early so I don’t think it had any affects on him! I’d say embrace it! My health worker was never worried about my weight loss during pregnancy as long as the baby was measuring fine.

christinarossetti19 · 17/08/2020 10:27

I don't midwives weight women regularly throughout pregnancy any more unless there are concerns.

I lost weight during pregnancy (from a bmi of 24 at 8 w) because I had an unusual type of GD but my baby was fine (he was premature but for other reasons and was considered large for his gestation).
They told me in the hospital that babies are like parasites and will take what they need.

heroineinahalfshell · 17/08/2020 12:22

I had a BMI of 32 at booking in. I gained very little in trimester 1 and 2 (7 lb total before 28 weeks), but in the last month I've gained quite a bit so have gained 1.5 stone total (40+2 now). Baby's gain has always been on track around 50th percentile.
