Pregnant with 3rd - new job offer!

Hi,
Currently a mum of a 3 and 1 year old. Found out I got my dream job yesterday and then in the eve I found out I was pregnant. It has come as a massive shock as we have always wanted 3 kids but this job wasn't even in the pipeline when I got pregnant and as soon as it was we agreed we wouldn't try anymore.

I think im going to still take the job and wait until I start to tell them the news. Annoyingly I won't be starting until October so will already be in 2nd trimester. Also gutted because the timing means I won't receive any maternity pay. I'm feeling quite anxious and scared about it all.

Would be interested if anyone else has been in a similar position with a job and also just general reassurance of having 3 under 5 in a 2 bed house!

Tell them the truth?

This happened to me with my first! It was fine I'm still here 5 years later

You probably won't be entitled to OMP as that depends on your employer set eligibility but assuming you are working in another job at the minute you absolutely will be entitled to maternity allowance which is exactly the same as SMP just claimed from teh gov rather than your employer

It'll be fine!the worst bit will be telling them, but once it's done it's done and legally they can't do a thing. Congratulations on teh pregnancy and job!

Thanks so much. Do you think I should wait until i start to tell them? As currently only 7 weeks... so I can get some sort of benefit even if I havent worked at current employer for 6 months?

I feel so awkward about it all! Typical timing..excited about pregnancy but terrified about financial impact! And also making a good impression at new job which I wont even start til October!

This happened to me with my first (currently in Mat leave with my 10 week old). Got the job, 2 weeks later found out pregnant, started at 12 weeks, told them at 13 (after my scan due to previous loss and needing a risk assessment to be done).
I didn't qualify for SMP but I get maternity allowance which is the same amount as SMP anyway.

You'll be fine x

Hiya, you should be entitled to maternity allowance which is £151 a week for 39 weeks. I had to close down my self employed business due to COVID and started working for my most recent employer on a temp contract at the start of June. Im sure I was at the beginning of my third trimester and I'm due next month! They were aware of my pregnancy and happy to accommodate me as needed for scans/appointments. All I've had to do is send 13 weeks worth of payslips, along with a form from my employer explaining that they will not pay me SMP and why (not employed long enough). As long as you've been paying NI contributions you should be entitled to the full £151 a week :) personally I would tell them sooner rather than later, however wait until you've been given a formal written contract

Bobojangles · 13/08/2020 11:39

I've 7 weeks with no 3 as well 🙈 and they'll all be under 5 but we do at least have a 3 bed house

My work know already because I work in health care and have extra risk assessments, i wouldn't tell your new employer until the 12 week scan if j was you
