Hey ladies , I went to the hospital on Saturday due to a suspected UTi so I just wanted to get everything checked they did a dip test and the women said I had traces of a uti which I did not understand if she meant it's not showing fully as a uti or what ?? However she said she would send it off to the lab which is good and proscribed me with amoxicillin for 7days

So my question is I heard that some people say that some antibiotics do not treat UTIs because it's resistant to it so is amoxicillin the best of UTIs or do you guys think I need a better one ? Thank you xxx

In my experience amoxicillin is utterly useless at anything; it's the cheapest antibiotic so always the "first try" option. I never let myself be prescribed it anymore, my GP can see based on my history that any time I have been, I'm back a week later, still in pain and needing something better. I hope it works for you though! UTIs are no fun.

Pretty sure I was prescribed nitofurantoin for a UTI when I was Pregnant and it is specifically for urine infections and safe to take whilst Pregnant

It depends where you are. Different areas will have different common bugs to cause UTIs and those bugs will be responsive to different antibiotics and resistant to others.
In some parts of the country Amoxicillin will be 1st choice, other parts it will be useless.

Nitofurantoin is recommended for pregnant women, i had it a few weeks back for a UTI

Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic - meaning it’s used to treat a whole bunch of different things. In pregnancy it is the second line treatment for a UTI. Don’t stop taking the Amoxicillin if you have started, continue the course unless after 48 hours there is no improvement then contact your GP to get an alternative (preferably Nitrofurantoin). As you said the dip stick showed you had traces of infection; but without a culture sample they wouldn’t know what bacteria is affecting you which is why they probably gave Amoxicillin because it fights against a number of bacterial infections.

Depends how pregnant you are what the first line option is. Amoxicillin is a perfectly good first choice. If your symptoms don’t improve, give the midwife a call - within a couple of days they’ll be able to see the lab results which also check which antibiotic the bug is sensitive to.

The dip tests measure for various things including leucocytes, a type of white blood cell. Levels of these can indicate infection.
Trace is the lowest, then you get one plus, two pluses etc.

Can’t comment on your specific situation, except to say that you should listen to your own care providers and follow their advice as they know your history.

But that’s how the tests work :)

I was prescribed co amoxiclav twice during pregnancy for UTIs and no issues were had.

Once at 9 weeks and once at around 30 weeks.
