28 weeks - Worried baby will be huge!

whilst at a scan that was needed for another reason the consultant took a few measurements of baby for me.

The AC measurement is what worries me as it’s already on 95th percentile at 28 weeks, I’ve included my other measurements - just Wondered if anyone else similar measurements and how big baby was when born?

Consultant made no mention of the measurements but as I say that was not the reason for the scan so assuming she didn’t look at the measurements in any detail...

HC 265.5 - 67th%
AC 251.1 - 95th%
FL 54.9 - 83rd%
EST weight - 2lbs 15oz - 84th%

Did anyone else get AC measurements around this estimate - just wondering how big baby was when born?!

Scans are notorious for being wrong.

In this pregnancy my baby was 50th centile at 20 weeks, 75th at 28 and now I’m having extra scans as they are saying she’s 2nd centile from 32 weeks. According to them she’s actually shrunk Confused

I’d take it with a pinch of salt.

Scans have something like a 25% error margin do the measurements are really nothing more than an estimate. And your baby is on the scale of normal.

For what it's worth both mine were over 99th on head circumference at birth (neither spotted at the 34w growth scans), and now at 4and 2 you'd not know.

AC can be skewed by the baby just having swallowed amniotic fluid. You could take it at another time and it might be 50th centile. It’s usually taken with a pinch of salt unless it’s off the charts, consistently high, or they have other concerns about gestational diabetes. Also the abdomen is squishy so it’s not a bit you have to worry about getting stuck!

Also you understand it's 95th centile for the gestational age of your baby on the date of the scan? Not 95th centile for a baby born at 40 weeks?

DS was estimated 4lb 5oz at 29 weeks. Always off the graph for bump measurement (4 weeks ahead ) and 3 weeks ahead by scan dates. Final scan at 36 weeks weeks had him at 6pb 13oz and he arrived at 38 weeks weighing 8lbs so accurate here but had a fab birth, no tearing at all and just gas and air.

Ladderinmytights · 09/08/2020 10:18

I was told the whole of my pregnancy she was a big baby but she was born weighing 5lb 7 so really dinky. I wouldn't worry about it.

Luckyme30 · 09/08/2020 10:18

Thanks for reassurance all. I had read that the scans are not massively accurate. My OH was born a big baby and so I was just getting a little concerned that I too would have a big baby (not that it matters so long as healthy) but didn’t really know if I should be worrying about GD.

Also @Shelley54 I didn’t know that was how the measurements worked, thank you for pointing that out :)

Hey all, can i join? Really nervous and anxious here. In 35 week now an have developed high blood pressure and they've said im borderline pre eclampsia. The baby was measuring on the bigger side at 32weeks at 5ibs, and now at the 35 my growth scan says 5ibs 13oz but the scales such as the AC, HC have dropped and worrying so has the FL which of course iv googled and now im terrified its down or something. Anyome with similar experiece?

Shelley54 · 12/08/2020 22:51

@Michelle292 First breathe. The measurements are not exact and it's a guesstimate at best. Secondly, are they measuring the baby differently eg 7cm is now 5.4cm, or is the reduction on the centiles? Eg was 65th centile and now 50th?

Shelley54 · 12/08/2020 22:52

PS in the last few weeks baby should be putting on half a pound a week so 35-38 weeks is around a pound in weight so baby seems to be growing fine.

Michelle292 · 12/08/2020 22:56

Here is a pic of the recent scan, you may be able to make more sense of it.it seems to be loosing weight if anything.. im only about 5.3 myself in height but of course im worried.
