Hi Girls,
Just wondering if anyone believes in the oldwives tale about the babys heartbeat being below 140 for a boy and above for a girl, I'm at 142 so thinking it could be a girl now but the baby was active at the time!!! What dya think??

Im 22w+5d and babys HB is always between 140-146. Two different scans have confirmend that he is a boy

ScaryMonsterStories · 18/10/2007 21:29

Heart rate changes thru preg.

In my non-scientific analysis of about 6ish babies I conclude the following:

Heart rate low (135bp or below) = boy OR laid back not a care in the world, bomb, could strike and I wouldn't bat an eyelid girl

Heart rate high (145bp or higher) - girl OR hyperactive boy!!!

feedmenow · 19/10/2007 20:09

Scarymonstersstory, I think your research is probably just about spot on!!!!

xxxNotAnIckleOtterxxx · 19/10/2007 20:11

somewhere on the internet is a study - a proper study that says clearly that it is 100% 50/50 regardless of heartbeat

jamila169 · 20/10/2007 00:36

I saw a study and the results were plotted on a graph, and apart from the two extreme ends of the curve, it was random. The only interesting thing was that at the very low H/R end of the graph, it was mostly boys and at the very high end it was mostly girls, but the graph was a proper bell curve so in the range 130 - 150 the numbers were equal and most babies were somewhere in that range.

Our midwife reckoned she could tell by the clarity of the heartbeat rather than the rate - apparently girls have a "cleaner" beat than boys. She got DD right, anyway

Ooooh, this is interesting. I was also thinking about tracking the heartbeat nearer due date as I would love to know (but not formally iyswim)- they don't tell you in my area anyway.

Can't wait to find out feedmenow if the stats stack up against the scan!

feedmenow · 08/11/2007 12:13

20 weeks - 143bpm

I'll be 22 weeks on Tuesday so I'm going to do my last "self assessment" on Monday evening and will post again on Tuesday after the scan!

iampgatlast · 08/11/2007 12:24

i had a sexing scan at 16 weeks and was told i was having a boy. at a midwifes appointment the following week she openly came out and said that based on the heart rate she would predict that the baby was a girl.
i have had a 4d scan since and i am most definately having a boy so it is just purely anold wives tale in my opinion.

same as the old wives tale about how you carry the baby...the amount of times i have been told im having a girl because i am all out front.

beller · 08/11/2007 12:30

well im 33 weeks now..and babys HB has continually been over 140 and usually over 150...still dont know the sex...

feedmenow · 13/11/2007 08:01

22 weeks today and off for my scan in an hour!

So, if this old wives tale is right then shouldn't this mean I'm having a girl?

Will be back in a few hours to let you know.....

22 weeks - 148bpm
21 weeks - 148bpm
20 weeks - 143bpm
19 weeks - 148bpm
18 weeks - 147bpm
17 weeks - 150bpm
16 weeks - 156bpm

beller · 13/11/2007 08:17

oooooooh goodluck feedmenow! xx

feedmenow · 13/11/2007 12:36

I'm back!

Well, I have to say I am very surprised to be telling you that in this case this old wives tale appears to be correct! According to the sonographer I am having a girl!

I am actually rather surprised as we all felt sure this was a boy.....

beller · 13/11/2007 12:42

congratulations on your girl feedmenow!!xx
Wonder if it will be true for me too.....45 days til expected d-day..would make it easier f it was a girl....i cant think of many boys names i like! hahaha
Congrats again xx is this your first?

feedmenow · 13/11/2007 14:54

My 3rd beller. Thanks for the congrats. I already have a dd and a ds so really wasn't fussed about which it was. Was just expecting a boy!! My poor ds is really upset cos we were all so convinced it was a boy that he obviously got his hopes up about ahaving alittle brother, and now he's sad cos he's got nobody to play football with
So you must be due just after Christmas?

dkay · 14/11/2007 13:57

Congrats feedmenow, that is brilliant. Thanks for keeping the thread up to date with your readings. I'm 33 wks now and 2 wks ago the heartrate was 140 so don't know what to think really! Have an appointment next week so I'll see if it has lowered or got higher then!
