If your 1st baby was premature, was your 2nd baby premature?

Just that really. My first dc was born at 31 +4. No reason. Waters broke and 24 hours my baby was born. I have no health conditions. I am thinking about a 2nd baby and im wondering what are the chances of having a preemie baby again.

I had an unexplained premature Labour with my first (34 weeks) and second was born at 37 weeks. It felt strange as not knowing why my first was, I had no idea if my second would be but I was assured they’d likely not be. Congratulations!

Hello, both of mine were early: ds1 born at 36 weeks, ds2 born at 35 weeks. No health issues or explanation here either. I’m currently pregnant with number three, this time a girl so, although I plan to be ready for her from 34 weeks, I’m hoping as there may be different hormones kicking around she may stay in longer!

Wannabegreenfingers · 03/08/2020 21:42

No, apparently only 5% of 2nd babies are born prematurely if the 1st was a premie. I went full term - 1 day before due with my 2nd. 1st was born at 35 weeks.

Thank you @TildaTurnip. Im like you. No idea why baby came early. Healthy with no medical conditions like pre-eclampsia. I would like another child but waited a bit because it was a bit raw still. We had to spend time in nicu. Dc is great now. Well done on getting 37 weeks.

My first was born at 36 weeks after my waters went randomly. Second I had to be induced at 39 weeks with high bp. No signs of him making his way out before then!

I had my daughter at 32 weeks - no reason ever found. I went through years of trying to work it out. Luckily she is now a healthy 5 year old, and we are very grateful.

I am now 23 weeks with a baby boy - and petrified that it will happen again, or even earlier. I’ve voiced my concern to my consultant. He has measured my cervical length at 13 weeks and 22 weeks, on my request. It will be checked in 3 weeks time again. He said I’m at increased risk of another preemie - if it happens again, it’ll likely happen earlier. But there’s a good chance that it won’t happen. And that I should enjoy being pregnant (after my 32 weeker and 2 miscarriages, I’m not sure I’ll be able to enjoy and relax!).

Best wishes with whatever you decide. It’s such a traumatic thing to go through.

Mine werent very prem but
Ds1 was 36+1
Ds2 was 35+4
Ds3 was 39+5

With ds3 i started having pains at 34 weeks and thought labour was starting, I was admitted for monitoring for 3 days but it stopped and I carried on til almost term.

MissHemsworth · 03/08/2020 22:23

One at 31w second at 39w 4d. Xx

LetTheRiverAnswer · 03/08/2020 22:29

I went longer each time, but still on the early side- 32 weeks, 36 weeks and 37 and a bit weeks. No reason I know of for the prem birth, I got a few extra checks during the second pregnancy, back to usual for the third.

Preemiemumma101 · 03/08/2020 22:47

@newyear i wish you all the best for this pregnancy. Like you, ive been question why i gave birth prematurely. Its taken me a long time but i dont blame myself anymore. @eloised thats fantastic news.
