No heart beat detected at 5.3 weeks

Ok so I'm currently pregnant and had some brown discharge at about 5 weeks so I rang my GP and they managed to get me in for an early scan to rule out an ectopic pregnancy . At the time I thought I was further along but when I had the internal scan I was only measuring 5.3 weeks but no heart beat was detected ! is this normal not too see a heart beat at this stage? They can't bring me back in a couple of weeks to re scan due to COVID which I think is ridiculous they just expect me to wait until my 12 week scan and hope for the best I can't afford to get a private scan so I'm just going to be pulling my hair out until then! 😥 has anyone else had a similar situation and had a re scan and seen a heart beat ?? Please help ! 😩

I was told at 6+2 weeks pregnant (after a very heavy bleed) that there was no heartbeat and the sonographer said it wasn’t unusual to not find a heartbeat at that stage.
Went back at 8 weeks and there was a heartbeat.

I’m sorry you have to wait so long to find out if everything is okay. Fingers crossed for you!

anonymum95 · 02/08/2020 11:04

Pretty sure it can't be detected until 6-8 weeks. Hope all goes okay for you

RedCatBlueCat · 02/08/2020 11:12

The 11 year old who has just walked through the door didnt have a heartbeat at 6w+something.
Very, very common not to have a heartbeat before 6weeks.
That said, how much further along did you think you are?

eurochick · 02/08/2020 11:18

It's too early. My ivf clinic scanned for a heartbeat at 6+1, and that is with absolute precision as to when conception happened. I think typically a heartbeat starts just before six weeks.

AbbieFB · 02/08/2020 11:26

My friend had two bleeds in the early weeks and they wouldn’t give her an early scan at all. Now that they know your pregnancy isn’t ectopic I’m not surprised they won’t bring you back in for a reassurance scan.

5+3 is a too early for a heartbeat so try not to worry. How far along did you think you were?

@MellowMelly thankyou for your story has definitely made me feel better :)

@anonymum95 that's good to no I have read that in a lot of places I think it's just because I did see a heart beat with my son at this point that's why it's making me worry so much !

@RedCatBlueCat
Well this is the thing I had a miscarriage last month so the MW told me that that's probably why I thought I was further along than I thought because my usual ovulation day would of possibly been different so I think it is probably right what there saying I just got it wrong . I thought I was 6 weeks so only a few days difference !

@eurochick thankyou :)

@AbbieFB that's the thing they usually would bring people back in a couple of weeks to give people the reassurance but the only reason there not is because if COVID but different places have different policy's I guess on how they do things .

I had a scan at the EPU at 6+4 and they could only see a very faint heartbeat - she said if it had been 1-2 days earlier she wouldn't have been able to detect it at all, so at 5+3 I'm not surprised they detected nothing! I'm now 31+1 with a healthy baby 😊

Mummy120494 · 02/08/2020 13:08

@bluemoon2468 hi thankyou so much for your story has definitely made me feel much better :) going to try get the money together to get an earlier scan ! Don't think I could possibly wait until 12 weeks but these stories have certainly made me feel better :)

@Mummy120494 if you're really anxious and a private scan will be difficult for you to afford you could always go to your GP and explain the impact on your mental health. Depending on who you see they might book you in at the EPU.

ivfdreaming · 02/08/2020 17:02

5+3 is far to early to see a heartbeat

It's unusual for EPU to turn you away until 12 weeks most are rescanning at least within 2 weeks - I'd try them again x

With both of my DC there was no HB until nearer 8w so try to not worry too much. Easier said than done, I know. The baby is SO small at that stage that it can be so difficult to make out so much as a fetal pole, let alone a HB
