I'm 30 weeks pregnant, relatively normally pregnancy other than a growth scare and recently developed gestational diabetes. The last two days I've had pain under/around my right rib/bra band area. It's gotten worse and doesn't seem to be getting better with rest. It's a constant ache that worsens when coughing, sneezing, bending over ect. I have no other symptoms i think baby is kicking normally. My midwifes phone line is closed now for the weekend and I have no credit to call my local emergency hospital delivery suite number. I've got a midwife appointment 9am on Monday and im wondering is it worth calling 111 and asking them to contact hospital and for me to go up there or is it not so serious and I can wait until Monday? Anyone ever had rib pain with no other symptoms and it but we out to be serious?

Yes had it. found sitting on a birthing/Gym ball, more comfy then a chair. Just put down to general aches and pains. But if constant, really painful or gets worse then def seek advice.

I had something similar op - is it trapped wind, try doing some gentle stretches and try getting comfy in different positions.

KLM19 · 01/08/2020 18:33

Better safe than sorry give someone a call.. and if it's nothing it puts your mind at ease Flowers

Smeghead97 · 01/08/2020 18:40

It's definitely not trapped wind, ive been to the bathroom and such since it started. I've been trying to find comfortable positions and see if i can stretch it out but it doesn't seem to help

I thought pain in the ribs indicated preeclampsia. I'd definitely try with 111.

Foreverbaffled · 01/08/2020 18:45

Hi, hopefully just muscular or indigestion. In rare cases though right sided rib pain can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. I’m really not trying to scaremonger as it’s probably something totally innocent but thought it was worth saying.

showmewhatyougot · 01/08/2020 18:49

Don't wanna scare you, but that can be an early sign of pre eclampsia. With the fact you have gestational diabetes (pre eclampsia is more likely to happen with GD) I'd defiantly go get checked x

Clairey844 · 01/08/2020 18:50

Please get checked-I developed a rare and dangerous form of pre-eclampsia at 38 weeks and the first sign was a constant pain where you're describing and not being able to get comfortable.

It's far better to put your mind at ease by being checked and it being nothing than to ignore it and risk getting really ill.

Hope all is well, it's probably nothing and I obviously don't want to scare you but I dismissed mine for 2 days assuming it was just part of being heavily pregnant
X

Thankful everyone. Not gonna take any chances. Gonna call 111 and go down to the hospital

You are doing the right thing to get it checked, but I had something similar and it was diagnosed as rib flare. I remember it fecking hurt though, I described it to the GP as feeling like I'd been kicked by a horse!

AHF1975 · 01/08/2020 19:39

Yes, please get checked. That might be liver pain which can indicate pre-eclampsia.

Smeghead97 · 01/08/2020 20:42

I called 111, they got a doctor to call me back. They tried suggesting it was heartburn or that baby was in a funny position 😑. Told me drink ice water, change position, have a nice hot bath ect. I've already done all of that. Apparently because I have none of the other symptoms of pre eclampsia its just general pregnancy uncomfort. Cant help but feel like theyre taking the piss. Gonna have to wait until monday to see the midwife, hopefully it goes away by then

I had awful rib pain from that point onwards because the baby was wedged into my ribs as I wasn’t expanding as much as I should have. I also ended up with a growth scan scare but the baby was growing fine- it was just me that refused to grow anymore.

BabyG123 · 01/08/2020 21:24

Get check it can be a sign of pre eclampsia.

Fingers crossed it isn't but better to be safe and check!

Heyha · 01/08/2020 21:30

Just wanted to say I had this one and off and like a PP it was because I was struggling to accommodate growing baby...also had a growth scare towards the end and she was petite on arrival but still is. If you're worried you can always call 111 again, never feel guilty for getting things checked especially with pregnancy and babies. Hope it is just baby sitting funny and s/he shifts soon, though!

Missmonkeypenny · 01/08/2020 21:37

I've had this with both DC. DD actually fractured my rib Confused

CountryGirl36 · 01/08/2020 21:44

Had this for weeks now. LO is back to back and its a common sign of it. I can’t sit or lie comfy anymore but i am 38 weeks now.

legalseagull · 01/08/2020 21:45

I pulled a muscle between my ribs and it was so painful. Coughing or sneezing killed! Hopefully it's something harmless like that

NoGinNotComingIn · 02/08/2020 05:39

Can't you top your phone up on your card or get your husband/partner/a friend to ring triage? I did have rib pain with both my children but I assume it was because I'm not very big and the baby was trying to grow, one was also back to back, the pain was awful with her but I was further along, when it got bad I was 35 weeks plus.

If you are worried you should always get checked and I'd never rely on 111 in pregnancy, they can't see you and don't have X-Ray vision down a phone line. You need to speak to a midwife, if your symptoms are a sign of preeclampsia I'd want to get checked.
