Hi. Im 29 weeks prego and have extreme pain in my right rib lately and its getting bad. My baby is head down. Just had a detailed check up a week ago and everything was fine. I have read that baby is probably moving around the ribs and thats causing pain. Just wanna know if anyone of you experienced it as well. Thanks

Also want to mention that the pain isn’t constant. Sometimes during the day and night and when I change position or start walking it goes away after a while.

I’ve been getting this, usually if I’ve eaten a lot, I think it’s a mix of baby and stomach pushing my ribs out?
Also think my bra isn’t helping, it’s better without.

Clift19 · 22/07/2020 19:17

I had this real bad. Particularly if I say or laid in a certain position. My sister in law had the same.

gonewiththerain · 22/07/2020 19:19

I’ve had this in both pregnancies, it’s position of baby and that they kick the same rib repeatedly for weeks.
Having a broken rib is less painful imo

I'm 37 weeks and have had this for the past few weeks, like other posters I've been told it's just down to babies position/everything stretching to make room. Some things that help me are having a shower and concentrating the shower on the sore part, using a heat wrap (sensibly obviously) and stretching my right arm up. There's also videos and things of stretches you can do to relieve it, I know we have to be careful about these things when pregnant so I only try the ones that look pretty basic.

onetwothreeadventure · 22/07/2020 20:14

I had this during my second pregnancy. Towards my due date I couldn't sit in the car for more than a few minutes without crying.
Sometimes sitting/lying with my arm extended over my head or rubbing around the rib helped eased it a little.

I've struggled with this for the last few weeks. At the front it feels like something is constantly stuck under my ribs on the right hand side, been told baby is head down. The only way I am comfortable is lying down so I can stretch myself out - sitting upright on a chair is horrible. So eating at a table, car journeys etc are so uncomfortable. At the back on the same side I also get pain at the back of my ribs, so I can't lie on my left side at night in bed (as is recommended) - I can only lie on the right side which seems to ease it!

It's the most frustrating thing about pregnancy so far and is making everything difficult 😭

mrs87 · 23/07/2020 06:16

Oh and I'm 33+5!

It can be a sign of pre eclampsia. Take your blood pressure If you’ve got a home monitor and look at the other symptoms of pre eclampsia online just to be on the safe side

Can you please help me and tell me what can i do to relieve my pain. It is getting unbearable with every passing day.

@Glow11 I think if the pain is increasing and unbearable then you need to call your maternity unit to be checked out just to make sure everything is okay

Im almost 32 weeks and ive had babys head firmly lodged in my rib and I wouldnt say its unbearable!

FH27 · 23/07/2020 16:15

Hey @Glow11 sorry to hear you are having such bad pain. Some things that help me are using a heat wrap, a warm shower and lying down and stretching out my arms. If you have to be a position where it's sore like driving etc I find taking deep breaths can help. You can also take paracetamol and if you're really struggling I'm sure your doctor could prescribe something stronger. Sorry I dont have a magical cure, I think it's just another one of these fun things that happens when you're pregnant. X

I had this and my midwife did tests for HELLP syndrome which thankfully it wasn't. I had a very tightly packed high up bump and I was in complete agony for weeks The only thing that seemed to help was just lying flat on the floor on my back. I used to literally be in tears every day at work because I couldn't cope with it. This photo was the day before I gave birth. Speak to your midwife and get tested for HELLP to put your mind at ease.

Cloudwalk · 23/07/2020 20:01

Same, I'm on paracetamol and dihydrocodine, incredible pain and it's been weeks for me too. Sending hugs!

I would keep getting checked by midwife and ask for a ultrasound of liver and kidneys too to be super sure everything is ok!

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 23/07/2020 20:48

I had that pain. My midwife at the time told me the pain was probably bruised ribs from baby kicking. It turned out to be an inflamed gallbladder which I'm currently waiting to have removed.

Glow11 · 23/07/2020 22:19

Thank you so much everyone for such helpful replies. Called my doc for appointment and i will go see her tomorrow. She prescribed paracetamol for now and im feeling so much better after taking it. Spent all day lying in bed and I Have felt no pain since 5-6 hours. Thanks all amazing people for your help. :) really hope you all feel better soon too and the pain goes away. xx

Hope you get it sorted ok. Just to add to the mum who has an inflamed gall bladder, ask them to check your appendix too. Appendicitis during pregnancy is relatively rare but hard to diagnose as the appendix can move. I’d mention it to the doctor/midwife just in case.

My appendix had to be removed. I thought it was the baby kicking, my fifth pregnancy! If the pain gets worse suddenly then go to a&e. It’s very rare though, it’s far more likely to be bruising, but best to get checked out.

Willow4987 · 23/07/2020 22:37

I’ve had this too. Literally felt like baby was pushing my ribs out

The only way I could stop it was to lie down

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 23/07/2020 23:19

@peajotter thanks for the advice, DD is 1yo now and a little madam Grin
It was my liver that was affected by the gallstones during my pregnancy, although it wasnt discovered until after DD was born. Midwife thought my raised liver levels was cholestesis when it was actually gallstones blocking the bile duct. Luckily the ultrasound showed my appendix was ok. I hope you are much better now.
