Miscarriage at 5.5w - preg symptoms now worse?

Hi, this is my first time posting here. After finding out I was pregnant for the first time, I had some light spotting and cramping just over a week ago - my EPU did an ultrasound and confirmed everything looked in order and I was measuring at around 5.5 weeks. The very next evening, I had an extremely heavy bleed (no cramping) and the following day it turned into dark brown ‘gunk’. As this was on the weekend, I phoned the EPU first thing on the Monday (by which point the bleeding had tailed off into light spotting again and stopped the same day) and was told I had most definitely miscarried. However since then, my morning sickness symptoms have increased and I feel worse than I did this time last weekend. Is it possible that I’m still pregnant? I’ve done a Clearblue weeks indicator test which is still showing as pregnant 3+ but I know my hormones might take a while to settle down....

Hi OP, didn't want to read and run. Sorry to hear you're going through this. The hormones that cause symptoms can stay in our bodies for weeks after a miscarriage, and they could be to blame for you still suffering symptoms. That being said the EPU should scan you to check if it is a miscarriage or not to be safe.

MinesALatte · 19/07/2020 11:10

Hi OP, I don’t have any experience of this - I had a miscarriage at 5 weeks but it didn’t involve much bleeding - however I can’t believe EPU confirmed a definite miscarriage without a scan! That sounds bonkers to me, I would push them to do a scan so you know for sure. Failing that if you can afford it go for a private scan x

Anna0588 · 19/07/2020 11:16

Thank you so much for your replies. I was told there would be no point in scanning me at such an early stage as they wouldn’t be able to tell much and I should simply get back in touch if a test in 2 weeks time still shows as positive. I will definitely try and push for a further scan to see what’s going on, I just want it confirmed one way or the other :-(

Definitely go for a scan if you can. Private ultrasound clinics I think normally do scans from 6weeks for reassurance. The window to the womb clinic that they have nationally I've had good experiences with. I know not everyone will have but wanted to recommend!

ShyOwl · 19/07/2020 11:23

Sorry about your miscarriage Thanks
Depending on how high the hormone got it can take a couple of weeks for the hormone to drop, I think it took two weeks for me. The sickness may be as the hormones are returning to normal? Did the EPU check your hormone levels at all to check they were actually decreasing?

Anna0588 · 19/07/2020 11:37

Thanks so much for the recommendation 2020mumtobee, I really appreciate it.

ShyOwl - thank you, no I haven’t had any tests at all, the EPU just diagnosed it over the phone and whilst I thought that was pretty odd, I just assumed that must be normal. I did wonder if the sickness would be my hormones adjusting again. I suppose I’ve just kept a tiny glimmer of hope! I think I need to organise a scan just so I can get confirmation...

Just thought I’d pop back on to say I had a scan and much to my amazement there was a little baby with a heartbeat! Turns out I have a hematoma. Thanks so much to all for suggesting I push for the scan 💗

I just saw this thread but just wanted to say how happy I am you saw a heartbeat and healthy, growing bean. I hope all stays that way ❤️

I was just coming on to say get a scan as I had a massive bleed at about 7 weeks with my last pregnancy and just assumed I’d miscarried. Felt unwell a couple of weeks later so was scanned and there she was all arms and legs on the screen. Now a very boisterous toddler!

I also had a subchorionic haematoma. It was pretty big and almost surrounded the pregnancy so I was put on bed rest until 12 weeks and progesterone injections
It had almost completely gone by 12 weeks though. I hope yours goes as smoothly, I tried not to worry too much as from what I’d read most pregnancies carried on fine (it was still a very worrying time though)

tubbycustardtummyache · 23/07/2020 22:02

And I forgot to say - congratulations!

Anna0588 · 23/07/2020 22:02

@apapuchi thank you so much 💗

@tubbycustardtummyache aw thank you so much, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the little bean on the screen! So good to hear that everything turned out okay with your pregnancy 💗 I am going to try and take it easy - haven’t been told that bed rest is a must for me but will maybe tell my partner otherwise!!

I think the bed rest was just because the haematoma was so extensive, bed rest seems quite unusual advice these days

This is brilliant news! So pleased for you. Thanks for sharing! X

ShyOwl · 24/07/2020 07:56

Congratulations OP! Good luck for the rest of the pregnancy, take it easy x

Even before I read your update Anna0588 I was like wtf? Definitely sounds still pregnant! No pain with bleeding and epu still said you miscarried! They should be careful with what they say to patients before even checking it out. Yay for your lil bean Wink

ARD1983 · 05/08/2020 22:39

Hey @Anna0588 - I'm so glad things have worked out well for you. Your situation sounds almost identical to my wife's. She had a heavy bleed at 4.4 weeks which lasted for six hours, followed by the brown stuff. Five days later, she's still testing positive (3+ on the CBD test) and our IVF clinic called today to confirm her HCG levels are exactly where they should be for this stage of the pregnancy. We don't know what to think atm. She's showing the early onset of symptoms (tiredness, getting some sickness, mood swings) but until we have our early, six-week scan next Tuesday, we're still kinda preparing for the worse :-(

Just found this thread and I had exactly the same.

Lots and lots of bleeding and cramping at 4/5 weeks convinced I had miscarried.

DS is sleeping holding my hand right now.
