HIGH NT but low risk blood results! I'm so confused.

Hi,
I am 13+2 weeks pregnant and had my scan at 12+3 however the NT was measuring at 4.6mm but everything else looked ok with the baby. The sonographer could not really tell me much apart from that they will fast track my bloods coming back for the DS testings and I have a consultant scan booked at 16 weeks.
My blood results finally came back this morning after a long 5 day wait, they all came back as low risk which is an absolute relief.
However I feel really confused now, will the consultant scan pick anything more up, why would the NT be high if everything is low risk. I am not due to see my midwife until the end of the month so feel like I'm just driving myself crazy with worry for the next 3 weeks until the scan.

Hello ladies!

I had my scan and the Nt has come down from 3.5 to 2.8 .. the risk of downs etc was also very low at 1 in 3500. They offered me amnio but I don’t know if I’m being naive but I declined as the results of everything else seemed ok. Still worrying though. Hope everything is ok for you all xx

@Worriednewmom
That is such good news, I am so pleased for you!
I did not have the amnio either, my consultant scanned me have has found a slight issue with baby's heart so I have been referred to fetal medicine in Birmingham for them to check everything and then from there see if they advise the amnio or not xx

Little update ladies. I had a scan today and they looked at everything and said there are no issues so far and everything is developing perfectly. They said my placenta is sitting low but that can b normal as I'm 16+ 5. My NT measured at 4mm which they said is safe at this stage of pregnancy. Another scan in 3 weeks to tick a couple little things off and if all is good after that I'm back to a it bring a 'normal pregnancy'. They're still offering me amnio to rule everything out but I won't get it unless something seems wrong

My husband came with me for the scan last time but that was because I was supposed to be having the amnio. I am due to be going Birmingham Womens Hospital this week so that they can check baby's heart more thorough and he is allowed to come that with me to so it is definitely worth an ask.

So sorry you're in this situation. It's utterly horrible and have been through it recently. I had a similar experience to @Treaclepie19... high NT, low risk Harmony, combined test 1:3 for T21 (but we knew it wasn't that because of harmony test).
I was reluctant to have invasive testing because they told me it probably wouldn't show anything, but in the end I had a CVS at 14 weeks and it did show up a v rare deletion in C5 and in the end we chose to end the pregnancy, which was obviously awful but we believe we did the right thing.

If you want answers I'd think about getting a CVS, which you can do up to 14 weeks. For an amnio you have to wait til 16 weeks so there's a two week window where you can't really do any testing. The test results take 2 weeks so that's something to consider too.

I'm so sorry, it's so hard. Everyone kept telling us that a high NT can actually be fine, or be a stand-alone cardiac issue that can be rectified. I'm sure that's all true, and we were really unlucky, but glad we did the CVS. Sending love xx

Treaclepie19 · 10/08/2020 17:11

I'm glad all is looking fine.
Just to add that nothing showed up on our scan except a possible heart issue that they'd written off as too small to even be a problem. So I would agree that if you want answers an amnio is the way to go.
Hopefully all will be fine for you though Flowers

Im so sorry @Amymone. Our little boy had deletions of chromosome 2.
I'm nervous about not having had further testing in this pregnancy but we shall see.

@Amymone May I ask what your NT measurement was?

Amymone · 12/08/2020 10:40

Thank you @Treaclepie19. I'm so sorry about your little boy 😢

My baby's NT was 4.3. They measured it (even though it was too early) at 10 weeks when we went for the harmony test, and at my 12 week scan it had stayed exactly the same. Didn't have any other visible abnormalities at that stage, though they think it was maybe a cardiac problem resulting from the syndrome that caused the NT. If our baby had had a cardiac problem alone and no syndrome (multi-systemic) I'm sure we'd have continued with the pregnancy xx
