Has anyone got pregnant after medical abortion before even having a period

Deal all,
How soon after a medical abortion ( mifepristone and misoprostol) it is possible to get pregnant again. The doctors told me to use contraception and avoid getting pregnant before having a period. I read body can be superfertile after abortion, and what if I try?? If I am superfertile than what is the point of avoiding it??... but I dont know if these count for medical abortions... if you could share your experiences I will be thankful. Best wishes to everyone.

I am guessing that this was a medical abortion following miscarriage? if so I am so sorry for your loss.

the point of waiting is because if you don't use contraception, it can be very difficult to quickly determine the difference between a new successful pregnancy vs a potentially fatal complication from the abortion not being quite complete, leaving behind even a tiny amount of debris in the uterus can lead to a serious infection. if you haven't been using contraception and get a positive pg test then it could be either, and it takes a while to work out during which time any infection could get bad. if you have been using contraception (or entirely abstaining from sex) but don't return to normal hormone levels and a period, then they know something is wrong.

@YinuCeatleAyru agreed with all this that was what my doctor told me

@littleangle46 absolutely no medical background here at all but have looked into this myself and I have read that the more fertile window is a good couple of months (up to six I have read) so if it is not the first month afterwards all is not lost don’t worry (if I have correctly understood your concerns - apologies if not)

@YinuCeatleAyru unfortunately the heart of my baby stoped at 6w5 days. I wait for 2 weeks but nothing changed, yes it was a medical portion, after silent miscarriage.

So sorry to hear this. I had the same a few years ago. You will be OK. Follow your doctor's advice, be kind to yourself. Rest, grieve, take your time. It can take 2 or 3 weeks for your body to return to normal - waiting for your period to return is miserable but is a reassuring sign that all is well.

So very sorry for your loss Thanks. I've been there and honestly, it's pot luck. I read lots of stories about being super fertile after my mmc and it put a lot of pressure on me. It actually took me 8 months to conceive after. Give yourself time to grieve if you need to.

littleangle46 · 07/07/2020 22:16

@Chanel05 thank you for your words. my heart says try ... because I read that in average people ovulate in 2 weeks after the medical abortion... but I used many drugs and they are in my system and even if I conceive can end up sad again...

@littleangle46 I tracked my ovulation after my surgical management and I didn't ovulate until CD30. I stressed myself so much over it and I should have probably let myself have one period first. I had totally negative opks then went to a wedding, had a dance and realised I'd ovulated that day (I temped) because I wasn't focused on it, I relaxed. My cycles were all over the place in the 6 months after the surgery, I ovulated a different time each time.

I'm now 30+1 with my rainbow baby and honestly, it is terrifying at first. The first 12 weeks for me I was on edge constantly and then between the 12-20 week scan I still suffered anxiety so it can really impact you.

Firevie · 08/07/2020 10:00

@Chanel05 sorry for asking but I was just wondering if you started tracking ovulation before you had your first period? If so, did you use ovulation sticks to track? Also, do you mean your first ovulation was 30days after surgery? How long did it take for your period to come after surgery? Apologies for all the questions but I’m looking at a surgery next Tuesday and these are the questions on my mind as I want TTC as soon as possible. Xx

bananamuffin99 · 08/07/2020 12:04

I had similar, my babies heartbeat stopped at 15 weeks. I took mifepristone but things progressed very quickly and didn't take the 2nd pill. I waited for my period to come then we started trying again, my next period never come and I'm now 25 weeks pregnant.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do Flowers

@bananamuffin99 so sorry to hear about your loss but pleased you’re now expecting - yay! How long did it take for you to get your first period after the pill? Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xxx

Chanel05 · 08/07/2020 13:23

@Firevie so sorry for your loss Thanks. I started using ovulation sticks after I got a negative pregnancy test as you can't ovulate until all the hgc is gone. I got my negative pregnancy test 21 days after surgery, first ovulated 30 days after the surgery and my period came 43 days after the surgery. I think the following month my cycle was 39 days, then 35 days.

Firevie · 08/07/2020 13:29

@Chanel05 thank you so much for giving me all the details! This will help me! Thank you!!! Hope you’re well xxx

Sweetie I'm sorry for your loss.
You won't find many women who've had miscarriages who will be comfortable with the word abortion being applied to them (at best, it is a "spontaneous abortion" but generally miscarriage is used and you will get more comments related to what has actually happened to you with this term.
I've had an ERPC after a missed miscarriage, I did wait as I didn't want the hassle of not being sure if a positive result was still related to the miscarriage or was a new pregnancy. There isn't really any other reason to wait, other than emotional well being.
(I did have a successful pg after rmcs by the way)

littleangle46 · 08/07/2020 18:20

@Iggi999 Thank you very much... I am not a native English speaker I cant perceive the differences in the terminology. The heart of my baby stoped in the 6 the weeks. I cant perceive what the word abortion refers to, to my understanding miscarriage is something that your body does, and abortion is something that you must do to stop the pregnancy. I did not have any sign of a miscarriage. I find out there was no heartbeat while still having all the pregnancy symptoms, we waited another 2 weeks hoping the baby will grow but nothing happened, there was no heart beat at 9 weeks and baby was measuring still six weeks... at first I was inclined to miscarry naturally than doctors convinced me that waiting can take weeks, and could be risky . Thank you very much Flowers

Please don't worry I just wanted you to get support from people who've had miscarriages and they are unlikely to use that term to describe their losses. You didn't end your pregnancy it ended when the heartbeat stopped which was so unlucky for you. Those weeks of waiting must have been awful. I hope you are being looked after and get some better news very soon Flowers
