Placental Insufficiency - Advice what happens now?

Hi just looking for some advice or stories from people that have been through something similar. I had my 32 week scan to be told that there was reduced blood flow between me and baby and booked me in for a follow up scan 2 weeks later. Anybody had this before? Not sure what to expect at my next scan 😕

Did they not give you any advice?

GimmeAy · 05/07/2020 13:04

I'd have expected them to at least explain to you what that means, what intervention may be likely, what symptoms to report - did they tell you nothing?

Rainbow714 · 05/07/2020 13:07

Not really no, it came very.unexpected as one consultant said everything was fine. Then a different consultant said she wanted to scan me again to keep an eye on the baby as the reading on the scan was slighlty higher than normal. She told me not to worry baby could of been in a funny position ect. But i can't help thinking what if there is something wrong, She told me to keep an eye on movements ect which i am, there is no concerns about babys growth as she is growing well.

Hi, I had this.
Ended up delivering early, well, 37 weeks so not too early.
“Intrauterine growth retardation” was the result I was told. In other words I had a small baby, 5lbs.

All fine, baby just fed loads until weight caught up.

I was home within 48 hours with no intervention for either of us.
Good luck, just take advice and do as they advise, will be ok.

Rainbow714 · 05/07/2020 13:21

Thank you for sharing your story crosser62 im glad all was okay with your baby. When was this picked up on your scans? Did you have a natural birth or a c-section?

What centipede is baby on? Essentially they will rescan baby and do a Doppler to measure cord flow and placenta flow.

If it is severely restricted it is IGRU www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/pregnancy-health/complications/intrauterine-growth-restriction.aspx and if baby isn’t growing discussions will be made regarding early delivery.
My friends son had it and he was born at 34 weeks by csection weighing just 3lbs.
My sisters daughter had it she was born at 38 weeks at 6lbs, she was induced.

They might just monitor and you might have weekly Doppler scans to check cord flow as well.

My DS and DD were both small, although DD didn’t have this she did stop growing at 36/37 weeks and dropped centiles down to the 0.04. I was due to induced at 37 weeks But had a sweep and she came natural;t.

Centipede 🤣🤣 centile!!

Rainbow714 · 05/07/2020 13:40

Centipede 😂😂 haha. Thank you for sharing, there is no concerns about babys growth she was weighing 4lb 13oz at my 32 week scan. Im just a little anxious suppose, should this of been picked up sooner? At an earlier scan ect.

I had this. Flagged as a possibility at my 20 week scan so I had a follow up at 28 weeks at which point things had got pretty bad. I then had lots of scans (daily in the end) and monitoring, at each appointment balancing whether the baby was better off in than out. Things got really risky at 33 weeks so she ended up being delivered at 34 weeks exactly. She was tiny and too weak to feed, meaning three weeks in nicu, but is now a lively five year old.

It was a horribly stressful time and not the start to her life we wanted but we all got through it.

Rainbow714 · 05/07/2020 15:34

Thank you for sharing your story eurochick that sounds really scary and stressful. Best option to get the baby out isn't it, im glad all was/is okay and you got through it.

I had a section (breach baby)
I actually had pre eclampsia so they said that my placental insufficiency was due to that, it was picked up when I started with symptoms of pre eclampsia at around 32/33 weeks as I recall.

My then 5lb, growth retardation baby is now a 5 foot 7, 17 year old with his head permanently wedged in the fridge! No I’ll affects whatsoever.

Rainbow714 · 05/07/2020 20:35

Im on medication for high BP have been since i first found out i was pregnant but showing no other signs of pre-eclampsia. Im 34 weeks now and got my scan tomorrow not sure what to expect at all. Glad all went well and there was no affects, pregnancy is such a worrying time isn't it!

@Rainbow714 how did you get on today?

Rainbow714 · 06/07/2020 20:13

Hi placesrobe7099292 todays scan went well, the sonographer was pleased with the blood flow and the reading has gone back to normal - she explained that the baby could of been in an awkward position last time which resulted in a higher reading and explainded why the follow up scan. A consultant should contact me still tomorrow so i will ask all questions, feeling relived and glad all is okay. Thank you for asking x

Brilliant news Rainbow. Write down your questions so that you get them all in whenever consultant rings - I forget everything when they start to reassure you.

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/07/2020 23:09

Out of interest are you taking baby aspirin and / or heparin? I was given both to prevent micro-clots / preclampsia as I have a clotting disorder. With your high bp aspirin might be recommended - have a chat with your consultant.

Rainbow714 · 07/07/2020 05:58

Thank you GimmeAy, me and my husband prepered a list of questions. Will feel less anxious once ive spoken to him.

GrumpyHoonMain yes im taking asprin was recommend after my earlier scans. Thank you x

@Rainbow714 that’s great news, I hope the consultant gave you some reassurance too 🌸

Rainbow714 · 08/07/2020 10:48

She did thank you, feel much less stressed now. Next scan at 36 weeks and maby will discuss possible induction due to high BP x

boymum4 · 08/07/2020 11:22

Hi op, I'm 37 weeks today and booked in for a c section on Friday due to a drop in growth from baby who has been measuring at the top and now on the 50th percentile based on my scan yesterday. The consultant said this can be to do with the placenta not working properly anymore.

I know it's not the same as your experience but I imagine you will be delivering around 37 weeks too.

Good luck wish you all the best x

Rainbow714 · 08/07/2020 13:25

Good luck boymum4 hope all goes to plan. Keep us posted of your news! Not sure what the plan is or if they will give me an induction yet. X

You will be offered more scans and possibly give birth before 40 weeks. Also possibility that they will not be happy with you going overdue.

I have pre eclampsia history and growth retardation from that. I have also had quite a few nights on the ward for obs but that mostly for my blood pressure.
