Maternity wear - dye from ASOS maternity line item stained all my body

Hello Mumsnet community - I've always heard a lot about this great group and I'm finally joining you all! My first post unfortunately is about a bad experience I had last week with a clothing item. I'm into my 6th month and baby is growing well and strong. I feel truly blessed every day! Fashion is definitely something that isn't particularly on my mind these days, I have hardly bought anything for myself as with the lockdown I spent most of my days at home and as I've always like baggy things anyway I still have a reasonable number of options. However I decided to treat myself to a pretty dress from ASOS maternity line as I conveniently had a yearly next day delivery pass with them. So I put on my new dress at around 7.30am and wore all day until I went to have a shower in the evening, and to my surprise my entire body was stained black from the dye. I had to be vigorously scrubbed down with a flannel and plenty of soap for about 15 minutes to get the ink off my skin! I was terrified of the chemicals being absorbed into my body so in order to know what was used to dye the fabric (no info on the website, nor on the label) I attempted to contact ASOS through different channels, and I'm still waiting for an answer 3 days after... I have a feeling I'm likely to be completely ignored as they are known for their poor customer service. I know I should wait a couple more days but this feels horrible!

My question is, has anyone had a similar experience? I feel really guilty about the whole thing, all I want is the safety of my baby girl. I know that textiles use extremely toxic chemicals and I'm terrified that some of this was absorbed through my skin and reached the baby.

Well done if you have read up to there by the way - English isn't my first language so please excuse my dodgy writing style!

Thanks all,

Mamma Gherkin

I'm not an expert at all but I'm sure it'll be totally fine. The chemicals used on the clothes would have been touching your skin all day wether the dye transferred onto you or not so you still would have had the same chance of them absorbing into your skin but you just wouldn't have thought about it Smile

Maybe wash darker clothes before wearing next time. Dark jeans often dye my legs if I don't wash them first. Your baby will be fine

Don't worry we are covered in layers and layers of dead skin. That was what got dyed and that's what you had to scrub off. As long as you didn't drink the laundry water I think you are fine :)

There is no dye that ASOS would have used in their clothing that would bring harm to your baby merely by wearing the clothes.
Due often rubs off on skin after first time use (especially dark coloured jeans) it’s absolutely fine.

Was it a velvet one by any chance? I have an ASOS maternity dress that dyed me purple 😂 No harm done. Serves me right for not washing it first and then wearing it in the rain!

God I hate ASOS! Last pregnancy, I got stuff from ASOS and George, and everything fell apart - nothing lasted the whole pregnancy

This time (2nd pregnancy) I spent a little more at Jojo maman Bebe, and even bought two pairs of leggings from Seraphine. So far I’m really impressed with the quality and feel they’re worth the money. So my tip is, spend on the best you can afford, it’s worth it! X
