3d/4d scan with anterior placenta - worth it?

Hi everyone,

I'm 31 weeks on Thursday and have been thinking about paying for a private growth scan which includes 3d/4d images. The 3d/4d bit is not the purpose of the scan so they won't rescan if they can't get any images so I'm just wondering if it's worth it.

I've got a high anterior placenta and baby's head is low so I'm hoping it won't be in the way but just wanted to see what other peoples experiences were?
If you have an anterior placenta, did you still manage to get some clear pictures?

Care to share? Smile

I have one booked for 26 weeks and was told by the nhs sonographer at my 20 week scan, if I wanted a 4d scan private, he would advise to book it in before 27 weeks with my anterior placenta. He said in general clear pictures are hard to get after 30 weeks. This is just his opinion though, you may find others who got clear pictures further on Xx

Hi @sel2223 I had a anteria placenta with my first pregnancy. I had my 4d scan done at bang on 31 weeks and they were all lovely clear shots. All I would say is don’t leave it to late as the further on you get the less room the baby has in there so the shots get less clear!

Hey

The place I'm going to states

Ideally, we would like people to attend between the 26th and 29th week of pregnancy. If you are known to have an anterior placenta (placenta on top of baby) or twins onboard then it is best at 28+ weeks. After the 26th week of pregnancy baby develops more fat around its face therefore giving a more defined image

I'm going 28weeks + 3 days! X

@sel2223 these are a couple of my photos from 4d scan!

Thank you for the replies ladies and thank you @Rainbowm for the pictures....look at those little chubby cheeks!

I gave provisionally booked a slot for this weekend and have to confirm tomorrow. I'll be 31+2 and still tempted although I appreciate the comments above about going sooner.
I'll sleep on it tonight. Thanks again

I have an anterior placenta with baby low, in my hip and got this sneak peek at around 33 weeks. It's luck of the draw really if baby plays ball but imo well worth the gamble!

Hey, i also done the same as you and unfortunately the placenta was covering his face despite it being higher up at the time... they say the best time for 3D scans with anterior placenta is 28 weeks but due to lock down we were unable to get in at that time. However i did get one picture..... a 3D bloody image of his bits as he had his legs wide open performing the little rascal 🤣 so my lovely 3D scan consisted of penis pictures. 🤦🏽‍♀️

sel2223 · 09/06/2020 23:20

@toomuchteaandcake oh I love that your baby has their eyes open and is smiling.

I'm tempted just as much by the growth scan part of the scan as I am the 4d bit but it costs a bit more than other places to get a package with 4d pics included as well hence why I was wondering if it's worth it.

I'm swaying to just going for it (although baby girl does have a history of definitely not playing ball at previous scans)

@FirstTM2020 I'm sorry but I.just laughed out loud at that! Haha.
I appreciate your honesty. I would have preferred earlier too but couldn't for the same reasons as you.

@sel2223 mine too! This is the first time we saw anything interesting, little monkey still spent most of the time with their hand over their face and trying to back away from the wand, but it was amazing to get these shots after a little while. Also got a lot of yawning shots 🙄 hope they are this laid back when they're born! I paid £95 for this sneak peek and the growth scan, it was great to have the reassurance of the growth scan as well as you say. It's a significant amount but I'm glad I went for it. Even if you can't get face we got amazing detail of baby's hand even which was lovely.

FirstTM2020 · 09/06/2020 23:26

@sel2223 every scan weve had thats all he does display his piece 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

If i was you i'd just go for it least its another scan to look forward to. Lots of luck xx

sel2223 · 10/06/2020 13:37

@toomuchteaandcake aww, that sounds a lot like our little one! At the 20 week scan she just refused to show her face so we had to go back for a rescan. Little tinkers! I've decided to go for it....it's £90 and sounds very similar to the one you went for. If nothing else, I'll be happy just to see that everything is OK and she's growing as she should be.

@FirstTM2020 proud little boy! Haha! Thank you x

Just a quick update for anyone interested. I went for the private scan today at 31+1 and had a great experience....we managed to get some lovely images despite the anterior placenta and little lady covering her face with her hands for most of the scan! So pleased I went.

@sel223 ah glad you went for it, it’s just amazing isn’t it seeing their little face 🤗 look at her the little cutie xx

toomuchteaandcake · 12/06/2020 18:31

@sel2223 yay! Yours was the same as mine then. But totally worth it for the pics, they are great, and totally priceless! Makes you so excited to meet LO too Smile

Birdy1991 · 12/06/2020 19:13

@sel2223 these are so lovely! I’m 33+1 and gutted I’ve missed the boat for one of these scans now 😫

sel2223 · 12/06/2020 19:24

Thanks ladies, I loved it and so pleased I went.

@Birdy1991 it was a growth scan with the 4D bit added on so not sure when the cut off is for it. It's a shame if it's too late but you're not far from meeting your little one on real life and that'll be a million times better!

toomuchteaandcake · 12/06/2020 22:04

@Birdy1991 I had one at 34 weeks (actually 34+1, I lied 🤣) with baby bond / ultrasound direct. As @sel2223 said it was a growth scan with a sneak peek in 4d

Birdy1991 · 12/06/2020 22:07

Ah thanks ladies - I’ll look into it and see 😊

Birdy1991 · 12/06/2020 22:15

@sel2223 @toomuchteaandcake are partners allowed at the moment?

sel2223 · 12/06/2020 22:32

@Birdy1991 mine was with baby bond / ultrasound direct too and they allow 1 person to accompany you.

OP posts:
toomuchteaandcake · 12/06/2020 23:09

@Birdy1991 I wasn't allowed a partner but they do now as sel says
