Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody had experience with an IDB flare up in pregnancy?

I feel like I’m on the verge of calling, whatever it is I’m having, a flare up. Did it affect your pregnancy at all? What were your symptoms?

Any insight greatly appreciated 🙏🏽

Hi, I have UC and think I'm having a flare up - not all of my usual symptoms but blood and mucus which has been getting worse.
After trying me on asacol I've been told today they will start me on a low dose of steroids for 6 weeks. I'm 29 weeks pregnant

MummyGoingItAlone · 08/06/2020 21:36

Yes. I had a flare of UC from 8-18 weeks of pregnancy, with a 2 week hospital stay from 14-16 weeks.
I was very poorly, had a bowel obstruction, I had a lot of steroids and increased my Humira from two weekly to weekly but baby was absolutely fine throughout.

I was advised to have a C section as I had a lot of swelling and scar tissue in my rectum but at 38 weeks they said I could have an induction, which I did.

Baby had no issues at all, even after the weekly Humira (which apparently I was supposed to stop at 28 weeks.

I hope you are ok?

Thank you for replying!

Must be terrible for you - I think I’m having a flare up of sorts. Been started on metronidazole, but hoping I don’t get put on anymore steroids as already on a daily dose for low blood pressure.

How is your bump feeling? I’m 13+4 and feeling very tender/bloated down there- I can’t tell if it to do with the flare up or something else.Confused

Hi! I’m currently 29 weeks and at 26 weeks I had a flare up ( I have Crohn’s disease) - this started as an absess and led to a week in hospital and 3 weeks antibiotics. I’ve been warned to prepare for a c section at 32 weeks (as they want to do a surgery then too to drain the absess) and I am being reviewed every week at the hospital surgical ward! I think as things get squished inside, the inflammation worsens however on the plus I’m feeling good, getting amazing care, and expecting my last dose of immunosuppressants this Thursday (really don’t know if this will go ahead based on absess/infection). My pregnancy consultant said that I need to keep my crohns consultant in the know with everything and not suffer in silence as pregnancy can be really difficult for IBD sufferers... I’m glad I got to 26w without issue! Hope you are ok x

LiliPad28 · 08/06/2020 21:40

@MummyGoingItAlone gosh that sounds just dreadful! I’m sorry you went through that! I hope you’re feeling better now!

I’m okay today, yesterday I was writhing around on the floor in cold sweats, vomiting clear/bile fluids with the familiar burning sensation I’ve had with all my flare ups in the past. I ended up sleeping the whole day, literally passed out just before we were about to go to the ER.

I’ve called the Drs today and awaiting them to get back to me. I haven’t got any bleeding at all and no cramping pains, but still can’t help worrying about little bump since it’s very tender to touch Confused

I had a mild flare up throughout the whole of my pregnancy but my CRP was 9, the best it’s ever been.

I had watery stools throughout but no problems with pregnancy. I had to take 5mg folic acid as it was low but other than that it was fine.

I would say that my stomach hurt a lot during pregnancy and I think that was due to the crohns. I also had terrible achy bones and was extremely tired which I attribute to flare up.

Consultant said they is a high risk of preterm labour but I went 6 days over!!

Good luck with the rest of you pregnancy and don’t worry too much.

Maggie90 · 08/06/2020 21:49

Sorry not a high risk, a ‘higher’ risk. Still very low though.

LiliPad28 · 08/06/2020 21:59

@maggie90 - that’s great about the CRP.

It’s nice to hear that your had an achy tummy too, albeit I wish you didn’t!

I’m worrying myself into thinking I’ve got a bowel obstruction or something. Since can barely pass stools/gas, between a 6/7 on BSC. Nausea and vomiting. It’s hard to tell what’s what in pregnancy!

I’ve recently moved over the the US with my Husband, so haven’t got a IBD team over here which isn’t helping matters. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wishing you all well with the rest of your pregnancies! Always here if anybody is struggling with IBD difficulties, I know it can be an isolating place sometimes!

Hope that all of you going through flare's start feeling better soon.

The main thing that has changed for me is they arent going to stop my biologics and will continue to have my infusions throughout the pregnancy.
Now that the disease is active, with that and some other factors I'm at higher risk of blood clots so have to inject myself daily.

Baby is measuring small but they dont seem to think its linked to the UC.

LiliPad28 · 09/06/2020 06:21

@Amichelle84 Eeeek those Clexan injections are not fun ☹️

Hoping I don’t have to have infusion, as been in remission for nearly a year now. I’ve got an appointment with the Dr tomorrow. Today was a little better pain wise, although still bloated and tender to the touch. Fingers crossed the ABX and PPI keep it at bay and it’s just a mild flare!

Hope you feel better soon!

Fingers crossed for you! I know how you feel, I was in remission too for 2 years and am gutted. Hopefully you get the treatment you need to settle it.

Amichelle84 · 09/06/2020 08:01

How far along are you OP? Good to know we arent alone in this so thanks for the post.

SassyPants87 · 02/07/2020 19:14

Hi all

Think my Crohn's is flaring up too! :( currently 25 weeks. I thought I was one of the lucky ones experiencing pregnancy dampening down symptoms but nope!! Historically I've been able to control it through diet and eating the blandest food ever!! Hoping it will clear it again
