Just that really. I'm hoping to hear what was requested from you by the NHS.

I have my 12 week scan next week and the appointment letter says a litre an hour before, however the booklet they send out with the appointment letter mentions a pint. There's of course a big difference.

I had to go to the epu for a scan at 6 weeks and did a litre but was about to burst it was so uncomfortable I could've cried. My private scan was a pint and that was fine (the sonography still mentioned how full my bladder was).

I know the easiest thing to do would be to text my midwife but I know they're busy and I don't want to be a pain

TIA x

None. This was 15 years a go. They scanner mu hospital had didn’t require a full bladder. In fact i was told to go for a pee to try and get her to move into a different position.

FourPlasticRings · 22/05/2020 21:53

Drink a litre but do it an hour before and empty your bladder first. You don't need a full bladder for the 20 week one though.

Thescrewinthetuna · 22/05/2020 21:55

Don’t drink too much I had to half empty my bladder halfway through the scan. Half emptying your bladder is way harder than it sounds! I’d just go opt for a pint of water a couple of hours beforehand.

raindrop84 · 22/05/2020 21:59

I had to go to the toilet half an hour before because I was desperate/needed a nervous wee! Then drank a pint of water and was absolutely fine, the sonographer even mentioned I had a nice full bladder!

doadeer · 22/05/2020 22:00

They never mentioned it to me. I always stayed hydrated all the time but nothing special for the scan

Thanks everyone - My appointments are 9am so I think I'll miss my morning wee and drink a pint as I don't want to feel uncomfortable.. really want to enjoy it 💕

Thanks again !

My scan is next week too! I think my letter says 1.5 pints, and it's first thing, so I'm thinking morning wee and then drink that over time... I don't think I'd be able to do a half wee so don't want to overdo it!!

RaN88 · 22/05/2020 22:33

Mine doesn't say how much to drink but to not empty my bladder in the 1.5 hours before the scan. It's for my 12 weeks.

dicksplash · 22/05/2020 22:45

A pint an hour before but I have a small bladder and process urine pretty quickly. I did as asked the first time and was agony as needed a wee so badly. Any scan since then I've tried to drink well in the hours before (so not dehydrated) and then either drank a big glass just before i left or got there early and drank a few cups of water in the waiting room. This was always enough for me.

Pygmyseahorse · 23/05/2020 00:09

My 12 week scan is a week after yours and last time with dd like others I had to attempt to half empty my bladder.. that's a hard thing to do!

Also, I had a scan once where my bladder was full and having HG at the time I just wet myself from the force of puking so much in the waiting room.. So classy
Anyway, it was 13 weeks and even after that they said it was fine

Try a few glasses of water but not so you are uncomfortable
If you need more to drink they will get you to wait outside, have some more and go back in when your bladder is fuller

raindrop84 · 23/05/2020 06:32

It's not the end of the world if your bladder isn't full enough, they'll just do an internal scan instead to get the images/measurements they need...

buffalopuff · 23/05/2020 07:01

I had mine a few weeks ago and wasn't told anything, so I took a bottle of water with me and drank a load in the waiting room before I went in. It was fine - the sonographer didn't say anything. It doesn't take long for me to have a full bladder at the moment anyway, but I wasn't bursting.

kkr168 · 23/05/2020 07:30

I had my last wee at 9:30 for an 11am scan, I then drank almost a litre. I was absolutely bursting for a wee by 10:30 but held on. It made the scan so painful, I actually felt bruised internally the next 2 days. If I had to do it again I'd only hold for 30 mins & drink a pint in that time.

userabcname · 23/05/2020 07:40

I've never been told a specific amount. I just don't to to the loo for a couple of hours before the appointment and it's been fine. I usually drink a lot of water anyway.

MichelleOR84 · 23/05/2020 08:10

I was told to drink 4-5 glasses .

With my first pregnancy I chugged that back before my appointment and literally thought my bladder was going to burst . During the scan , my sonographer even showed me how full my bladder, said it was too full 🤷‍♀️😂 and asked me to empty it . Scan went well after that .

With my second pregnancy I drank the 4-5 glasses of water over a 2 hour period before my scan and even peed before I left the house . By the time I had my scan I needed to pee again but I wasn’t uncomfortable. Scan went perfect !!!

GlassboatSailor · 23/05/2020 10:00

I have my 12 week scan in a few weeks. My appointment letter doesn't say anything about drinking water or having a full bladder. Should I be worried about that??

Superscientist · 23/05/2020 10:06

I drank between 500 and 750ml.
My bladder was too full to do the scan so I had to go for a wee as the sonographer couldnt move her into the right position to get the measurements she needed. With an empty bladder she got all the measurements within a few minutes.

No. I think it depends on the scanner at your hospital. I wasn’t asked to drink or have a full bladder and the scan was very clear.

None

FirstTimeBumps · 24/05/2020 08:12

I had this myself. Drank a litre. Was about to burst come the scan. Sonographer told me I'd over done it and next time not to drink so much 😑 drank a pint this time round at my 12 week scan. Also had a six week scan and had a lunch meeting before where we drank lots of tea and apple juice and water and I ended up needed to wee constantly but there was so.much in my system I just filled back up straight away 🤣 I actually peed ten minutes before the scan and was bursting to go again straight after.
