Did your baby go to special baby care after section at 38 weeks?

I was told today my baby would need to be born (via section) no later than 38 weeks. They said he might need to go to special baby care as section babies born at 38 weeks can have breathing difficulties with fluid on the lungs. I just wondered if anyone had any experience? Stories to share etc x

My DTs were born at 36+5, neither were admitted to scbu. Dt2 had breathing difficulties when she was born and went to scbu but joined us in the recovery room afterwards. They weighed 6lbs 6oz and 7lb 3oz.

Thanks everyone, this has been so helpful. And some really good weights too! I assumed he would be small! Xx

I had a section at 38+2 on the 14th.my baby stayed with me the whole time but he was making a funny noise the first 24hours but appeared to be breathing normally and we were allowed home.

My ds was born at 36+6 by emcs after I'd had steroids and went to scbu as a precaution, he did develop the breathing difficulties associated with cs babies and needed oxygen and cpap machine overnight. He was 7lbs 7ozs and perfectly healthy, just that initial blip due to how he was born.

Baby one born at 38weks (induced). No steroids. No special care. Out within 9hrs of delivery

Baby 2 born at 37+3 induction. No steroids. No special care. Only kept in longer as I got a bladder infection

I was induced at 37weeks with my DD. No special care needed, the paediatrician didn’t even look at her!! Good luck x

My baby needed special care after a CS birth at 38+6 and was on CPAP for the first six hours or so.

I had my baby by section at 36 weeks and he didn’t go into special care. He was just at the minimum weight (5lb at my hospital) and was breathing fine. I had had steroid injections a few days before to help his lungs develop in anticipation of him being born as it was planned. It certainly isn’t automatic!

⬆️ Sorry - minimum weight for not automatically being admitted to NICU/SCBU
