Getting hammered and being in charge of a baby is the risk, not breastmilk.

This. It's really odd how people who ff never talk about how much alcohol they can safely drink!

One small glass of wine or G&T per evening , all children perfectly fine

BrooHaHa · 06/05/2020 22:10

Yeah, pretty much all available research indicates that you're fine. But don't get so drunk you can't look after the baby. Basically, if you can hold the baby you can nurse the baby.

There is, for some reason, a distinct media bias on this and a real appetite for reporting on bad things that happen supposedly because of breastfeeding.

There was a tragic case some years back where a woman who had been drinking fell asleep in a chair while feeding her baby and accidentally smothered it to death. It was reported in the press as reflecting the dangers of drinking while breastfeeding. The woman was bottle-feeding the baby.

I drank pretty normally while breastfeeding - though not as much as usual Due to the constant having to get up in the night !!

SockQueen · 06/05/2020 22:37

It's completely different physiologically to drinking while pregnant, as others have already described. I'm not a big drinker, and haven't got properly drunk since having kids because parenting with a hangover is just awful, but yes, I have had alcohol and bf on multiple occasions.

No co-sleeping if you've had any booze though.

lollipoplola · 06/05/2020 22:40

I'm not a big drinker but did like the odd glass of champagne in the evening. Whilst breastfeeding I stopped this and now have a glass over lunch occasionally. It's nothing to do with alcohol in the milk but knowing that if they came in bed it would be safe.

Hercwasonaroll · 06/05/2020 22:41

Drink as much as I want (usually one glass a week cus I'm so knackered). Just no bed sharing afterwards.

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2020 22:41

I didn't drink at all either when pregnant or breastfeeding.

Thickmuthafuckers · 06/05/2020 22:42

My baby is still breastfeeding very regularly and I also drink regularly Smile. I don’t get falling over drunk, but I also don’t worry about having a few!

ZaphodBeeblerox · 06/05/2020 23:01

Such a strange bias against FTMs. Do you think we’re all naive idiots? I’m a FTM but I’ve been bf my toddler for 2.5 years.

springiscoming12 · 07/05/2020 00:12

What does FTM mean? misses point of thread

TenThousandSpoons0 · 07/05/2020 00:36

Doesn’t she just mean people who aren’t pregnant for the first time? Ie people who have actually had a baby and breastfed it rather than still pregnant w first? Think it’s not unreasonable maybe just not well worded. I knew zero about breastfeeding before having my first.

Nicknamegoeshere · 07/05/2020 01:24

As an extended breastfeeding mum there is no way I am going without any alcohol for the next three years!! I'm currently 36 weeks' pregnant with my third and my OH has already got a mini Prosecco chilling in the fridge for me when she is born (planned home birth).
I've not had a single drink throughout the whole of my pregnancy so really looking forward to having a little glass every now and again once baby is here.

Darkstar4855 · 07/05/2020 08:01

There’s no difference between drinking alcohol as a breastfeeding mum or as a formula feeding mum! The only risk is not being safe to look after baby/falling asleep with them on the sofa etc.

I’m still breastfeeding my 17mo and would go insane without being able to have a couple of drinks now and again!

Bienentrinkwasser · 07/05/2020 08:14

We co-slept for about 8 months so I didn’t drink at all then. I’m now such a lightweight that I only every have a small drink if I do drink! 😂 The research is quite clear though that alcohol in breastmilk poses no risks and that provided you are sober enough not to drop or smother your baby you are absolutely safe to feed.
