Anyone had a small first baby and needed extra checks?

My first baby was born at 41 weeks and was 6 pounds. I'm now 15 weeks with second and been to see consultant who said this is a risk factor for this pregnancy as she was small for gestational age. So he's said I will have extra growth scans this time.
Anyone also had this? Is it really anything to worry about?

I don't know but ive just been told the same. Im 9 weeks and was told il have extra scans after 28 weeks just to make the baby is growing ok

Growth scans are a good idea to check if baby is growing ok. I’m having them because he is measuring very big, but it works both ways. Be glad you are having the extra checks and care, I’m guessing they may intend to induce you slightly earlier than 41 weeks this time but it all depends on how those scans go really!

I did! I just had extra growth scans after the 20 week scan. Every 2/3 weeks. They just make sure the baby is following the predicted growth line.

I was monitored every 2 weeks from about 20 weeks because I had a small baby. He fluctuated between 9th and 4th percentile throughout pregnancy. Had my last ultrasound in week 39 and baby had had a growth spurt and was suddenly 20th percentile which was out of the danger zone so I had a normal birth.. They had told me though that if he stayed 5th percentile or lower they would have induced me the day after my due date if I hadn't already gone in to labour.

I had this. Was put on aspirin from week 10 of pregnancy with DC2 to increase blood flow to placenta in hope that baby would be heavier (birth weight was 1 pound heavier than DC1). Had extra growth scans but can't remember when from. I wasn't too concerned about the extra growth scans but I'm glad I had them, as was able to see baby and get more scan pictures.

And has anyone actually had a small baby both times? I'm just wondering why there is a possible risk with both pregnancies?

Dd1 was 5lb 3oz so really small. For various reasons, wasn't picked up on till just before birth. Seeing as she was my first baby and I didn't know the first thing about babies, her small size didn't worry me unduly. Babies are little right? Anyway she's now a strapping 13yo and tall for her age

My DS was having growth scans and they estimated him to be 7lb - he was 4lb 13oz and turns out he had stopped growing and I had undiagnosed pre eclampsia neither of which were picked up - my DD was 5lb 9oz and again regular growth scans estimated she was going to be 7lb ish and current pregnancy I am about to start having more growth scans but already have feelings of dread as have not had accurate experiences before!

My first was 5lb 12oz at 40 weeks. I had no extra checks with baby number 2 despite this. He was born at 41+2 and was only 6lb 11oz so I think I just make small babies!

Istwowyes17262 · 05/05/2020 17:17

Yes I did for my 2nd, Ds was 6lb at full term so had SGA, had growth scans from 26 weeks, these were every 2 weeks as DD was small as well. Growth slowed down at around 36 weeks and she dropped to the 2nd centile.
I had a sweep at 37 weeks in preparation to be induced at 37 +5, went into labour the same night. She was 5lb 8/9 can’t remember which and was 2nd centile. She’s a dinky dora now and only about 16lbs at 8 months.... I just have small babies I think!

My first was undiagnosed small baby. Had growth scans from 20 weeks with second and delivered by section at 34 weeks as had stopped growing.

Inadequate growth can be a sign of a failing placenta so that's why it has to be taken seriously. My (out of date possibly) understanding is that if associated with pre-eclampsia in the first pregnancy it may be less likely to happen in consequent pregnancies with the same partner.

Good luck.

My first was 5lb 11oz born at 42 weeks (Emergency section). No one mentioned her being small the whole way through the pregnancy. Second time around no one said anything about the fact I'd had a small first baby. DD2 was born at 38 weeks (Elective section) and weighed 6lb 6oz. I often wondered afterwards why it was never spoken of but both girls were/are perfectly healthy. DD1 is now 12 and already 5' 4"!

I am the same! Daughter was 6lb 9oz and 11 days late so they are monitoring me this time. Nothing was picked up during her pregnancy. I am due scans at 32 and 36 weeks, that’s the only extra monitoring. My daughter is now 5... has always been light. Was 15lb at a year and wore age 3-6m clothes at a year. At 5 she is still on 2nd centile for weight, but 25th for height. She is just a skinny Minnie! Always has been.
Having a boy this time. I’m 29 weeks, interested to see what he is like size wise, as birth and in life!! X
