I had my dating scan at 13+4 days. The technition too a guess and I'm just wondering if anyone else found out the sex of their baby so soon and how accurate it was.

A consultant would be able to tell you the sex at 12 week ours did.

firsttimemumhere · 05/05/2020 08:32

My sister was told throughout her pregnancy that she was having a girl! Popped out a Boy. They do get it wrong sometimes though it tends to be the other way round apparently.

PearPickingPorky · 05/05/2020 08:33

The genitals are not formed enough to be sure of the sex at that stage, so all anyone could do is guess. Unless you have a blood test.

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 08:34

The sonographer at my 12 week scan guessed girl and she was right!

HarrietM87 · 05/05/2020 08:36

With my son I had a private nuchal test done by a consultant obstetrician. He said he knew what it was and asked if we wanted to know. We didn’t so I guess I’ll never know if he was right but he seemed totally confident so I guess it must be possible. Also had friends told at their 12 week scan that it was likely to be a boy and it was.

TheTeenageYears · 05/05/2020 09:05

We asked at my private nuchal scan (can't remember exactly when that was but think 11-12 weeks) if they could tell the sex and were told 80% it was a girl. At 20 week regular scan we were told pretty much the same thing. I had a scan for low lying placenta at about 33 weeks and only then were they sure it was a girl.

Ive found the nub theory to be excellent with the right picture captured, girls are long and flat and boys can have a clear triangle on top. There is always a chance that something else has been captured by mistake but if you are lucky enough to get a video of the 12 week scan then it can be looked at for things that come and go:) Do you have any pictures you can post for us?

Starlink16 · 05/05/2020 09:12

I had 4 boys and with all of them I was told at the 12 week scan they were definitely boys but that officially they had to say 'looks like".

Lotus8 · 05/05/2020 23:30

Thanks everyone! Seems like it is more likely if they guess a boy.....the scull theory I'm interested in too, but no idea about it. I'll share any further outcome here :)

Hi Everyone - wanted to share an update on this topic.

I had the 20 week scan today and it has been confirmed that it's a Boy! So the Sonographer fuesed correctly on this occasion :)

There's a 50/50 chance they'll be right by guessing early but it's based on theories (skull, nub etc) mixed with their experience/hunch.

In reality, the genitals don't even form until 14/15 weeks which is why most 'gender scans' say from 16 weeks onwards.

And it's still not 100% even after 16 weeks... a friend of mine was told girl by several different sonographers at various stages through her pregnancy and had a little boy.

sel2223 · 05/06/2020 18:20

just saw your update OP, congratulations!!

Lotus8 · 06/06/2020 00:32

Thank you! And yes I totally get that these things are never 100% accurate. However at this check, the technition looked twice and then a third time as I requested scan pictures showing the gender. So I'm hoping it is definitely accurate as I'm planning to clear out all the girly baby cloths I have already :))

He was confirmed boy at 12 week nhs scan, but was reminded this wasn't a given, but she was laughing as she said it was quite evident at that time... every clinician who has scanned him always makes a joke about the size of it 🤣 it appears rather large on every scan.. he has remained all boy at 16 week scan, 20 week and deffo 3D scan i nearly shit myself when i seen it in 3D.. could not get an image of his face but there he was upside down legs wide open the show off !!

LeGrandBleu · 06/06/2020 01:21

For both my boys I was told at the 12 week scan but they were not able to tell for my daughter, so maybe it is easier to tell if boys?
I was disappointed not to know but left the OB/Gyn practice quite flattered as was told " what a beautiful bladder" by a rather attractive doctor!

Lotus8 · 08/06/2020 14:36

Firsttm2020 Grin your message made me laugh so much. How funny!
