Worried about scan photo

Hi there,

I'm really worried about my babies scan photo I can't help but notice babies nose and mouth seem to morph into one and there is a really strange shape around mouth? The midwife doing the scan wouldn't stay on the baby for any length of time she said it was fine as I told her I was worried but I have this horrible feeling something is wrong. Did anyone else's scans look funny around nose and mouth? My first babies scan was perfect looking! I'm also 17 weeks and they wouldn't tell me gender! Any helps appreciated thank you xxx

I can see a very cute upturned nose and then two lips below. Sweet :)

If she said it is fine then you need to trust that. She wouldn't have ignored something that was wrong.

At the anomaly scan (around 20 weeks) they should check for cleft lip and palate, at our scan the sonographer showed us the nose and lips. I'd assume if they haven't mentioned that anything is wrong, then it's all ok.

Some trusts aren't allowed to tell you the sex. In my experience sonographers will sometimes offer to tell you but often you have to ask, did you ask and they refused?

Gingernutlady · 04/05/2020 09:30

Remember baby isnt fully developed yet and they tend to look a bit alien like and smushed up during the growing process. Though from the scan above your baby looks perfectly ok to me. Cute little nose!

I'm sure if something was wrong they'd have mentioned it by now.

beenaa · 04/05/2020 09:31

I asked and she said it was too early but I found out gender with my little boy at 15+5 weeks or something. She was very short blunt and tbh I felt like I was wasting her time. I had to ask her to slow down so I could see the baby properly and even ask her to stop for photos. Was awful I'm so anxious after it! I've now convinced myself the baby has a cleft lip or Down syndrome! My next scan is in 2 weeks it's driving me mad!

It's likely palate development you're focusing on, separating sinuses from mouth etc, which wouldn't be completed yet by 17 weeks. If midwife said all was fine then it looks fine for this stage, your anomaly scan they'll do in depth checks.

Pipandmum · 04/05/2020 09:32

Gosh my scans looked like I had an alien in there! If the sonographer was fine about it you shouldn't worry.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 04/05/2020 09:38

Looks a lovely normal picture to me. I think it’s hard once you start fixating on something and worrying yourself - but I can’t even tell what you mean by anything looking unusual! You’ll get more detailed pics in a few weeks, hopefully that puts your mind at rest.

Bumsmet · 04/05/2020 09:45

Try to remember a scan is a split second snap shot of your baby. Imagine how you look in some candid photos Wink

aSofaNearYou · 04/05/2020 10:12

I feel like I'm looking at a different picture to you, it's the most typical baby scan photo I've ever seen! I think the woman doing the scan has just made you feel anxious, there's no indication there's anything wrong. Also with the gender, if they don't happen to spot a penis, then it can be hard to get an accurate answer. You just got lucky last time that it was easy to say either way.

Darkstar4855 · 04/05/2020 10:15

They will assess the mouth/palate on the anomaly scan at 20 weeks. A scan at 17 weeks will look a bit different because things are still forming. Are you having early scans because there’s a concern about the pregnancy?

Nov19 · 04/05/2020 10:22

the scans can make features look completely different to what they are. These are scans I had at 30 weeks and these snapshots are taken just minutes apart and the nose looks completely different on both. My baby is now 6 months old and his nose doesn’t look anything like either of these pictures!

sel2223 · 04/05/2020 10:24

I think you're stressing over nothing to be honest, that scan looks very similar to mine from the same gestation.

I think they're being encouraged to do the scans a bit quicker with Covid so you're in and out in as quick a time as possible....It's not ideal but it's for your own safety and as long as they're still doing the job of checking them over and making sure everything is ok, then they're doing what they need to do. It's a medical appointment and any problems picked up would have been mentioned (lots of things aren't even formed yet which is why the anomaly scan never takes place before 18 weeks).

Was it NHS or private? I don't think any of the NHS sonographers will tell you the sex before 20 weeks.

ScarfLadysBag · 04/05/2020 10:28

Is the father Cyrano de Bergerac?! Wink

Don't worry OP, my daughter looked like she'd been made out of melted wax in some of our scan pics and arrived perfectly normal! One of them she looks like she just has hollows for eyes, DH made a photoshop of it for Halloween Grin If there were problems, the scan would a) last a lot longer and possibly involve another sonographer or consultant being brought in and b) they would tell you there and then.

ScarfLadysBag · 04/05/2020 10:30

Also the images are just screenshots of a live feed, so if your baby was moving at the time the sonographer pressed the capture button, it will lead to some really weird-looking features!

kevintheorangecarrot · 04/05/2020 10:48

My 20 week old scan looked like he didn't have a chin! It was just sloped like / if that makes sense? Lol he does have one though and a cute button nose! I think your scan looks fine :) they would've said something if anything was wrong.

beenaa · 04/05/2020 12:59

Thank you everyone for your replies. I'm not sure how to reply to everyone direct.

This 17 week scan is classed as my 12 week because I had a bug at 12 weeks and then my little boy had a cold which we had to stay in isolation for and I caught it after him too! so this is my only free time get the scan unfortunately with everyone that's going on with covid.

My little boys scan was a private one to be fair that's probably why I got told so early.

If it’s a dating scan then they wouldn’t have a lot of time to look at the baby, to be fair. It’s basically just to measure the length of the baby and the thickness of the neck. For the twenty week anomaly scan they have a much longer time slot so they can have a proper look at everything.

BrooHaHa · 04/05/2020 13:48

Yeah, the dating scan is quite quick generally, as PP said. It's not there to give you a good look at the baby, more to check that everything is as it should be from the basic checklist they're looking at (very basic for a 12 week scan). The 20 week one will be much more detailed and they'll have a look at the lip then.

Overthinker1988 · 04/05/2020 13:56

That looks far more human than any scan image I've seen of my baby (I'm 33 weeks now and there were no anomalies picked up at 20 week scan).
I wouldn't worry, a scan isn't an accurate image of what the baby will look like, there's so much fluid, movements, baby could be at a strange angle and the images themselves aren't exactly high tech...in the sense that it's not meant to be a high res pretty picture, it's just there to show the basics they need to check. Plus at 17 there's still so much development still to happen.
They wouldn't tell you the sex at the first scan surely, I only got told at the second one which was just after 20 weeks.

2020lockdown · 04/05/2020 14:07

Our baby is due in 6 weeks and he has a cleft a lip, detected at 20 weeks. Not changed the way we feel about him at all, he's our baby. Our scan photo didn't look like yours if that reassures you..

ElectricTonight · 04/05/2020 14:40

It just looks like babies mouth was slightly open when the photo was taken x

Sunflower2019 · 04/05/2020 15:59

There a lot of difference between the 12 week and 20 week, mine look completely different (the 3D was another story it looked so scary In that 😂)
It’s hard to work out how baby will look it’s just a scan photo doesn’t show details :) xx

My son has Down syndrome and his scan pictures didn’t look like yours (his Down syndrome wasn’t detected at the 12 or 20 week scan, it was a postnatal diagnosis)

Mucklowe · 04/05/2020 17:43

It's a diagnostic test! It's for the sonographer to see the baby.
