Maternity clothing - first pregnancy

Hey Smile Just looking for some advice for when I should be buying maternity clothing or if it is even necessary. I'm 12 weeks and my own clothing is starting to pinch my tummy. Is it too soon or a bad omen to buy this early ?

It's completely up to you.
2nd pregnancy and only 7 weeks but I'm in some maternity clothes already due to bloat and for comfort, anything tight annoys me and anything high neck or tshirts make me throw up.

You may find some maternity clothes will swamp you depending on your size and bump so far, so you could just buy the next size up normal clothes or you can not button jeans but them fold over, use bra back extenders etc.

If you feel uncomfortable then I'd say go for buying either the next size or maternity and don't worry about omens or when is too early

@Sb131216 Thank you so much for the advice, really appreciate it! Smile.

Aw you are very welcome :)

I’ve ordered some bits from new look as my own clothes are getting too tight. I’m 14 weeks, so when they come I’ll see what they look like.
xx

I bought lots of leggings and tops in bigger sizes until I had a proper bump prob about 4 months ish, then got actual maternity clothes as they seems to fit the bump better. maternity jeans are actually really comfy!

LolaSmiles · 03/05/2020 17:33

It's completely up to you, but the wonderful ladies on the style and beauty boards suggested under the bump maternity jeans for the bloating stage. It was the best advice and I wore them from around 10-18/20 weeks. After that I preferred the over the bump ones.

Chanel05 · 03/05/2020 18:03

I got some maternity leggings from H&M around 10 weeks and they made such a difference to me comfort wise. I had to roll them down a little at first but by 18 weeks they fit nicely.

pretendingtobezen · 03/05/2020 18:07

Hi @Lunardreams

I felt the same and got my first maternity leggings last week at 12 weeks and feel so much more comfortable. My first pregnancy too so felt a bit strange as I haven’t got a proper bump of course but glad I did. Xx

Wolfgirrl · 03/05/2020 18:18

I think I started buying maternity clothes around 16 weeks. I had bad morning sickness until 24 weeks and hated anything digging in to my bump.

If you are wary of buying too much, just buy a couple of pairs of leggings and a pair of maternity jeans. Tops tend to last a bit longer IME.

New Look do good maternity basics.

JKSN · 03/05/2020 18:35

I bought stretchy trousers from Primark in a size up, and a pair of under bump jeans. They got me through to about 23 weeks, then I moved to over bump jeans. Looser fitting non-maternity tops will see you quite a way through. I also bought a couple of nice maternity t-shirts from New Look when I got to the third trimester. Dorothy Perkins do some nice jersey wrap dresses which fitted me all the way through.

Margo34 · 03/05/2020 18:50

I recommend borrowing your DP t-shirts and hoodies! I'm not bothering buying any mat clothes for as long as I can - not going anywhere and no one is coming round, so...seems pointless 🤷‍♀️

(I'm almost 20w)

TokenGinger · 03/05/2020 18:52

Early on, from around your stage, I had under bump jeans. I got them from Matalan for a good price. The over the bump jeans just rolled down.

I wore normal tops until around 18-19 weeks when I started to get a big bigger and then bought maternity tops and dresses for work.

I found h&m good for maternity tops and Matalan good for maternity jeans x

I am 14 weeks and panic bought maternity essentials last week because i was worried about postage times during lockdown.. I'm bloody glad I did! Don't think I'm showing but the relief of not having to wear tight clothes is amazing. They are rolled down about 3 times but so comfy.. I recommend 😂

October2020 · 03/05/2020 19:09

I'm 16 weeks and very anxious of things going wrong - I bought two pairs of maternity leggings and a pair of maternity jeans when things started getting tight. I haven't need any tops etc yet and am hoping to wait until after 20 week scan.

Tonimacaroni1920 · 03/05/2020 19:10

Boohoo is great for maternity clothes and if they don't fit, you've only spent a tiny amount, so it's not the end of the world!

JenDaw · 03/05/2020 19:13

Maternity clothes were a little on the large size until around 16 weeks for me- but I'd definitely invest in a nice pair of maternity leggings in your normal size for then (they may be a bit bit now but as a pop said, you could roll them a little...). Next's over the bump leggings are good and only around £12... I've also lived in a pair of under the bump maternity joggers (ASOS), and stretchy T-shirt's from Primark (I'm usually a 10-12 and bought size L). Also living in a large pair of Primark jersey shorts a couple of sizes bigger. There are loads of maternity sales on right now so you might be able to get hold of some bargains :)

For whole of this pregnancy I basically got by with a pair of pregnancy jeans, some pregnancy leggings, lots of tights, and then tops in larger sizes as well as lots of stretchy dresses. First pregnancy I bought horrible maternity clothes that I obviously never wore again, whereas this time I can still wear the dresses and tops, they're just roomy!

Oldestchild90s · 03/05/2020 19:26

I started wearing mine around 20 weeks (now 25) all depends on how you feel though, you want to feel as comfortable as possible.. saying that, my maternity jeans feel quite uncomfortable but thats because i've always been a 'Simon Cowell' high waisted jean kind of woman 😂 my tops are from New Look and a couple of sizes bigger than i normally get and fit really well with a bit more room to grow as well so i would definitely recommend having a look! I think Leggings are next on my list as they are supposed to be most comfortable.
If you feel the need to wear maternity stuff now then go for it 😀

DaisyRose144 · 03/05/2020 19:51

I didnt start wearing maternity clothes until i was about 23 weeks I think, purely because my other clothes still fit me (I used to put a hair bobble around my jean buttons so they werent too tight). However, now I am 38 weeks I'm thankful of what I have bought. I have bought jeans, tshirts, etc not loads, but enough to swap whilst others are in the wash. Highly recommend the maternity clothes from ASOS and H&M, only have the tshirts from newlook and wouldnt say that all of them are a great fit. I brought a pair of maternity joggers from H&M that I have pretty much lived in during lock down!

happymummy12345 · 03/05/2020 19:54

I never needed maternity clothes. My normal indoor tracksuit bottoms and t shirts fit the whole time. And my other clothes fit until I was about 7 and a half months. Then I just got clothes one size up for the rest of my pregnancy and for Labour.
Was back in my normal clothes within a month (only wore the bigger size bottoms so I was more comfy while my stitches healed and I was bleeding).

Colouringinbook · 03/05/2020 20:33

I brought a few smock type dresses and used to do the old hair elastic through the button of jeans trick. Probably went into maternity clothes at 18 weeks, mostly ASOS, H&M and Dorothy Perkins.

Maybelatte · 03/05/2020 20:39

A lot of people just buy normal clothing in a bigger size. If you’re a jeans wearer you will probably need maternity ones eventually though, the buttons just don’t fasten!

I have a few maternity items that I wear even when not pregnant because they’re comfortable and look good.

UnicornRainbow83 · 03/05/2020 20:46

I have been living in maternity leggings and smock tops since I was about 14 week, I'm now 32 and they all still fit and I feel very comfortable.

Lunardreams · 05/05/2020 19:07

Thank you everyone! All of your advice has really put me at ease. I've bit the bullet and ordered some maternity leggings and tops in a larger size from new look. Wishing everyone all the best with their pregnancies 💕
