Help! 9 weeks - dyed hair - didn't realise it was dangerous!

At the weekend, due to the lockdown, I dyed my hair with a box dye in bathroom.
When I realised the chemical were strong I ensure all the windows were opened, and I let it develop out in the garden - so super ventilated.

However, I've just read that doctors tell you not to dye your hair before 12 weeks, I would have never ever have done it if I'd of realised!

Has anyone else dyed their hair in First Trimester and found everything was OK of have I just risked doing serious damage to my baby?

Had private scan at 8 weeks and everything fine but I'm having to wait another 2 weeks for NHS 12 week scan.

Didn't know this! Dyed my hair monthly with DC1 no issues!

I dyed my hair repeatedly throughout all 3 pregnancies and all were fine. Don't worry. Just wait for the scan and put your mind at rest.

I know friends that only used ammonia free/organic/herbally type hair dye during pregnancy. There was another thread saying many others used 'normal' hair dye without issues, but I think there is very little scientific evidence either way.

I also dyed my hair all the way through with DS, every four weeks without fail!

I think it's if you're a hairdresser that's it's to be avoided. It's much stronger chemicals in a professional dye and it's inside so much more concentrated? Don't worry I'm sure you will be fine x

I dyed my hair in both pregnancies as I didn't know it was a risk. Plus there must be loads of people who don't even know they are pregnant and dye their hair so I bet it happens a lot.
There may be a possibility of a risk but I doubt it's much of one. Everyone is just very cautious with pregnant women as obviously there is no testing to prove what's safe. Try not to worry.

Thanks everyone! Think I've made the mistake of reading up on it and you only see the negative posts! Thanks for reassuring me!

I use a casting colours, which is only semi and coats the hair, rather than opening the hairshaft which permanents do. You are supposed to avoid getting dye on the scalp, but how on earth you do that- I have no idea???

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 28/04/2020 10:54

It's not dangerous! Where did you get that intel? I would nto be reading anything other than NHS/proper medical sources.

Cherryrainbow · 28/04/2020 11:41

It's fine hun. Sometimes your hormones may affect the way the colour comes out apparently but other than that there's no harm.

EithneBlue · 28/04/2020 12:51

I asked the midwife this at booking in. She said it is absolutely fine to dye your hair :-)

inwood · 28/04/2020 12:57

Agree it's fine, but ALWAYS do a patch test. I dyed my hair through pregnancy and suddenly developed an allergy to my usual dye at around 7 months, apparently skin changes are common in pregnancy.

Eight years later I am still allergic...

I did the same OP 36weeks+3 now but everything seems to be ticking along just fine. I also used a paint primer on some furniture in my first trimester when I was redecorating my upstairs bedrooms and upcycling some ikea drawers and then when I realised how stinky it was even with open windows I checked the tin which warned not to use when pregnant. Told my midwives and they said the chances of these couple of things doing any damage is incredibly low, it's mostly constant exposure to chemicals in a job that's more of a concern (although obviously try to avoid contact with any chemicals in the future), a diy hair dye job and half an hour of furniture priming is probably not a big deal. Hi what was the outcome? Did you have a healthy pregnancy? I’m currently 9 weeks & dyed my hair. I’m so worried as I miscarried 2 years ago.
