Hi ladies I was just wondering if any of you had taken either of these medications in/during pregnancy. I have been bitten and the Dr prescribed me Phenergan but when I googled it the first thing I saw was not to take in pregnancy so I rang him back to say I was unsure and he said it's what he would recommend and it is also given for morning sickness, I have also looked up about Cetirizine as well which is an antihistamine but doesn't come up when you search as not to be used if you are pregnant so really not sure what to do and was looking for information from any of you ladies that may of taken either.

I read the title and thought it was a baby name thread!

I suffer from quite bad hay fever but didn’t take any antihistamines during pregnancy. If it’s a bite can you apply a cream or gel instead?

I took phenergan for sickness during both my pregnancies, from 6 weeks ish to about 16.

Loratidine and cetirizine are considered ok. Piriton may be ok too depending on where you are in your pregnancy

Phenergan (promethazine) is widely used for pregnancy sickness. They all say that about using in pregnancy, usually because they haven’t been tested on pregnant women, as that would be unethical. Beware though, it may make you very sleepy..!

Hope you’re feeling better soon!

I took phenergan throughout my pregnancy, prescribed by my gp. My baby was born with a small birth defect that was corrected with surgery. I have not idea if it was phenergan that caused it though. My gp had assured me it was totally fine to take it.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 27/04/2020 23:28

They’re both fine. Phenergan can make you a little sleepy. Google any medication and it will say not to take in pregnancy - it’s not usually true.

I take cetirizine almost daily as I have a very bad allergy (not hayfever), and have been told it is fine. I also did a lot of research even though dr said it was ok and I couldn't find anything than said it wasnt.

I've had my 20 week scan and all was ok but I havent had my baby yet.

I was told the BUMPs website is good to check medicines (best use of medicines in pregnancy) and have checked loads of stuff on there.

When I was pregnant my obstetrician told me to take Piriton (chlorphenamine) for my allergy. She said that antihistamines can't be tested in pregnant women for obvious ethical reasons, so the packaging can never state that pregnant women may use them. But Piriton has over 40y use by pregnant women, with no adverse reports or concerns, so she was happy to recommend it.
