16 weeks pregnant and bleeding

Hi. Im 16 weeks pregnant now. At 14w 3days everything was going fine when I suddenly had an episode of bleeding at night. There was blood everywhere and I was extremely scared. I booked an appointment with my doc and she did an ultrasound and everything was fine. Baby had a strong heartbeat and placenta was fine as well.
She gave me progesterone which I started taking twice 3 times a day and was put on complete bedrest. I also got a second opinion and the doc said the same thing. The bleeding stopped after a few days but now it has started again and its a few spots of chocolate brown colour with just a few clumps (sorry for the TMI) I called the doc and she told me to continue the meds. I am on complete bed rest but I am extremely worried about my baby and constantly reading blogs to figure out what is wrong. Please guide me if something similar happened to anyone here.

Hi Glow11,

So sorry to hear you experienced this, it’s so frightening. I had this at 13+5 (a huge bleed), and then a couple of smaller red bleeds the same week. I’ve then had smaller brown bleeds on and off and similar discharge since. I’ve been back in and they found a cervical ectropion but didn’t think that would explain the first major bleeds.

I’m now 16+5 though and all healthy touch wood. I wasn’t put on bed rest but told to take it a bit easier (hard with a toddler in tow but I have tried) and it seems to have helped.

I hope you find some solace in the fact it does seem to happen and all can be ok, take care of yourself.

Hi coffeeorwine,
So happy to hear you are doing so well. This really gives me a lot of hope. Im waiting for the bleeding to settle so I can visit my doc on monday to get a detailed check up. I really hope doc can find an answer this time as the uncertainty really gives me anxiety. Hoping the best for the both of us. xx

Hi!

I had a large bleed at 14 weeks and another small 4/5 bleeds throughout my pregnancy.

I had a haemorrhage, eventually it got reabsorbed into my body but it was a scary time.

Baby was fine and totally unaffected. Apparently it's quite common.

I know it's a very worrying / scary time I hope you're OK

Hi Glow,

glad it helps to hear you are not alone. Not sure which country you’re in but do not feel you need to wait for the bleeding to slow, ring your midwife, doctor or maternity assessment if you’re in the UK and ask to be seen ASAP if you are anxious. Every time I’ve had a bleed they’ve been very happy to see me, do a doppler to check baby and check my cervix was closed. Unpleasant but worth it for the peace of mind.

I think it’s likely my big bleed was a hematoma and the smaller ones my cervix, and the cervical ectropion won’t affect the baby or you - some people have them when they’re not even pregnant.

Take care of yourself and I hope you manage to get some reassurance soon x
