Brown discharge and black mucus 5 weeks pregnant

Hi, just going out of my mind a bit. Have been ttc for past year and got a positive pregnancy test. Now 5 weeks 3 days and having brown discharge and black mucus. I am booked in to have an early scan in a week at epu.

I had exactly the same thing this time last year and ended up in a miscarriage with retained products that wasn’t picked up until 3 months later and cleared with a hysteroscopy, I had an emergency c section with my first child in 2017, he is now 2 1/2 and desperately want another but have had scanty periods. I was due to have a hysteroscopy to look into uterine adhesions (ashermans syndrome). Just so gutted that this is probably going to be a sad ending and wondering if anyone else has experienced similar?

Hi, I’m just wondering how long you’ve been having the discharge for?
Remember that discharge isn’t a sign of a loss and bleeding can still be ok at times too. If it stays brown that suggests old blood, if it turns bright red and heavy then it’s probably best to call the EPU to go in sooner.
This is a different pregnancy and new chance so try not to compare to your precious experience.
I’m currently 13+2 and had a tiny bit of pink spotting at 6+6 and then 2 days ago a tiny bit of brown which lasted only a few wipes. As far as I’m aware everything is fine, baby was fine at 12 week scan.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply! (This is my first post so wasn’t sure if I would get anything back) I have been ‘spotting’ for three days now. I think it is getting more but still only when I wipe. I have period like pains too. I really don’t know if I can wait a whole week for a scan. I have kind of accepted that it is a miscarriage but can’t bear being in limbo. The Dr did say I could go in sooner but they wouldn’t be able to see heartbeat and that could make me more anxious. I’m tempted to go in today to see what is going on in there, that way it may help me in the future trying to figure out what problems there are. Trying to stay positive but just so hard!

Reassuring to hear you have had some too. Do you have any reasons as to why you might be getting spotting? I am worried it may be because of Ashermans if not a miscarriage.

Just so desperately want a sibling for my little boy. Everyone I know is pregnant and it’s really starting to get me down!

Hi ladies, I'm no expert but after my experience it could be the implantation bleed. On Tuesday I was 6+5 bleed quite heavily for a few hours, they scanned me and to my surprise there was little bean, heart pumping away. They said it was the implantation bleed. I know it's distressing but please try to stay positive xx

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 10/04/2020 09:46

Furbabymum15- so pleased you got to see a heartbeat! Is this your first? It’s hard because everyone is different and every pregnancy seems to be different too! Just such an up and down of emotions and although my DH is very understanding, don’t think he gets the rollercoaster of emotions we go on! Confused

As it’s a bank holiday there is no chance of going in today so just a case of waiting and seeing where I am on Friday. I will be 6weeks + 3 by then so hopefully will see a heartbeat!

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday your prob best waiting til your almost 7 weeks they say it can be easier to see xx this is my second pregnancy, unfortunately I got bad news at my 12 week scan last time so I am praying everyday xx I've done the Great North Run past two years for a charity that researches pregnancy loss and still birth ......I hope I've finally got my reward 🙃

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 10/04/2020 14:34

@Furbabymum15 I’m so sorry to hear that, what an amazing way to give back to such a great cause. Will be praying for you that this pregnancy continues to be good news and you get your baby at the end of it! Flowers

Aww thankyou hun, I hope we all have the happy ending we deserve xx good luck

Prettylittlelady · 10/04/2020 21:52

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday I had a private scan at 9 weeks where they could see a bleed - not at the site of the pregnancy so it’s possible the early one came from there, at the 12 week scan she said there was no sign of any bleed anywhere so the tiny bit of brown the other day - no idea, maybe where she was pressing so hard in my tummy scanning but it was only a couple of times when I wiped and nothing for the last 2 days so just trying to be positive which is hard to do.

Prettylittlelady · 10/04/2020 21:53

It’s worth getting an early scan if you can just to put your mind at rest. X

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 11/04/2020 06:24

Thank you ladies! It seems to keep coming and going but certainly getting darker and possibly a tiny bit heavier. I am still getting positive pregnancy tests and feeling very nauseous so taking that as a good sign. Feel like if it’s going to turn into a full on bleed it will happen today, if not I am going to get a scan for Monday. X

Unfortunately I had this last year which started at exactly the same time - I sadly did go on to miscarry a week later x

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 11/04/2020 09:14

It now seems to have stopped all together? Did you get continuous spotting and then bleed or did it stop but you miscarried anyway? I know everyone is different and if it has stopped then I suppose it could mean a missed miscarriage?

Prettylittlelady · 11/04/2020 10:25

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday this pregnancy - that has seemed fine so far, I’ve had tiny amounts of spotting which has lasted less than an hour. No cramps or pain at all.
When I miscarried it started off like a grainy brown and within hours it had become bright red and heavy also with cramps.

lovelydream · 11/04/2020 12:53

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday
It was on and off for a couple off days then stopped altogether. I was testing using the Clearblue with weeks and it went from 3+ to 2-3 and then 1-3 - after about 4/5 days i then had bright red bleeding and tests were negative x

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 16/04/2020 12:45

Just wanted to update that I had an early scan today (after more brown, fairly heavy blood) yesterday and there was a heartbeat! I am 6weeks and 2 days and the little grain of rice seems to be healthy and as it should be. The Dr couldn’t find a cause for the bleeding and it has gone back to spotting but just wanted to let others know that it is not always a miscarriage. I know it’s still early days and I’m not out of the woods yet but praying for a baby at the end of all this!

Hi guys. I am 10 days late for period, had 2 negative tests a few days ago. I have had mild cramps since I was due for period on 6th April.. last period 3rd march, I have a naturally long cycle. I have been experiencing lower back pain and some brownish spotting started yesterday. I have intermittently felt nauseated the last week and I have lower back pain.. breast sometimes feel heavy, and I am tired but not exhausted I am still expecting it to be my period if I am honest. And trying to not convince otherwise.. can anyone please advise?? Thanks xx

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 17/04/2020 20:11

I think you will just have to wait on a period or a positive test? Or if you’re really going out of your mind seeing if you can get a blood test done with your GP but not sure what the situation would be with Covid?

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday just wanted to say that I have had Ashermans - it was treated last year. I had a referral to go back and see my consultant booked for May this year as my periods had got painful again and were only lasting 2 day’s but cancelled due to falling pregnant in Feb - I’m now 12 weeks.

From other ladies I know with Ashermans I think bleeding in early pregnancy is quite common, I’ve not had it though.

Alexiskenward90 · 17/04/2020 23:42

So glad you’ve seen a heartbeat that’s amazing. I’m 6+4 and bleeding today. Just got home from urgent care and they said I need to have a scan Monday so just praying I get the same outcome as you OP! Xx

tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 18/04/2020 06:21

@Luckyme30 that’s really interesting about the Ashermans. When I had my scan the sonographer was very reassuring about the Ashermans which was a relief. You’re a 6 weeks ahead of me so would love to hear how you get on with it all? Is this your first? Hope you’re feeling well?

OP posts:
tryingtostaypositiveeveryday · 18/04/2020 06:25

@Alexiskenward90 yes, I had spotting for about a week, then that stopped, then I had fairly heavy brown blood. Went in for scan while having this. All was fine and now the bleeding has stopped. Apparently just old blood being pushed out by uterus expanding, Stay positive this weekend (it will be the longest one ever!) I read lots on mumsnet that made me feel better, listened to lots of positive meditations and rested loads. Let us know how you get on Monday! Smile

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday thank you so much... still bleeding this morning red blood but not majorly heavy. We shall see xx

Luckyme30 · 18/04/2020 12:10

@tryingtostaypositiveeveryday I had my scan yesterday and the sonographer was also really reassuring and my consultant (who treated my Ashermans) was also very reassuring.

I think it can possibly cause some problems with the placenta and I’ve been told I might need a few more scans, the Sonographer also made a note of Ashermans for my 20 week scan and said that they will just have a look but she said from what she saw yesterday there is no cause for concern :)

Yes it’s my first so a bit worrying as never sure what to expect.

Keep me posted as to how you get on and if you have any questions just shout :)
