20W scan - do they write the sex in your notes?

Reading another thread on here about the anomaly scan has made me wonder about a few things. At the end of the scan, once they've finished the measurements etc, they usually ask if you want them to check the sex of the baby. If you say no - does the sonographer still know the sex and do they write it in your notes?

One of my friends is adamant that a midwife accidentally told her she was having a boy while she was in labour, but I thought the midwife wouldn't have known either way. Now I'm wondering whether it was in her notes?

Also if during any scan the sonographer says it's obvious which sex (but doesn't say which one) does that always mean a boy or is a girl just as obvious on a scan?!

Just curious musings... Grin would be interested in hearing from anyone who definitely knows!

I didnt find out worh either of mine and it wasnt in my notes. I had to have extra scans with dd1 and made sure I said every time that we didnt know the sex and didnt want to, just in case!!!

Just has my 20 week scan last week, confirmed it’s a boy but it’s not written anywhere in my notes :)

Not sure about how obvious it is for a girl, but when we had an early gender scan I could see clear as day he was a boy before the sonographer had even told me! 😂

Whoareyoudududu · 04/04/2020 09:01

No, it’s never written in the notes and they don’t tell you unless you want to know.

Lazydaisydaydream · 04/04/2020 09:09

Ahh that's interesting, so many people on the other thread saying it was written in their notes!

I won't be finding out, but same as my last pregnancy I'll be having additional growth scans so I'm very used to having to look away for the first part in case when she puts the probe down it happens to be the first thing we see Grin

Nope, the doctor said to me it wouldn’t be written in your notes as it isn’t medically relevant. More just a nice to know thing.

She then continued to tell me boys were lazy when admitted to NICU compared to their female counterparts 😂

We had a little girl and this did actually appear to be true as the little boy who was slightly later gestation and was heavier was in NICU for a week longer than DD 🙈

Not written in my notes.

I was induced and ended up with 5 different healthcare professionals in the labour room - it wasn't a busy night. Everyone was playing guess the sex. Smile

I found out and it wasn't recorded on the scan report or in my notes

20viona · 04/04/2020 09:17

Yes mine was written on my outcome form with the measurements for my file, however I did ask to find out the sex so unsure if it would be on your copy if you didn't want to know. This was last year in Staffordshire.

Nope not in my notes Smile

At the beginning of my anomaly scan the sonographer asked if we were hoping to find out the sex and we said no. When it was finished I asked her if she knew what it was (out of curiosity!) and she said no, she didn't see anything and purposely didn't go looking because we'd chose not to find out.

IME, midwives don't like to refer to babies about to be born as 'it'

So they default to either 'he' or 'she' (personal habit) for all babies unless they are told the sex (back in my DMother's day, all foetuses were 'he' and that was that)

So I doubt very much the midwife knew, or said they were having a boy (it wouldn't be in the notes). Much more likely that MW defaulted to 'he'.

BrooHaHa · 04/04/2020 09:19

Mine had 'FETAL SEX: FEMALE' printed on the report after the scan. But I did ask.

Maybe it depends on your sonographer, and if you didn't ask they wouldn't put it on the report?

Wanderer1 · 04/04/2020 09:30

I didn't find out the sex at my 20 week. The sonographer knew from the beginning that I didn't want to know. Towards the end I asked her if she knew (I had an excited curiosity about whether the knowledge of what sex I was having existed in the worlds) and she said no, she didn't know. She said that if the parents don't want to know then they avoid looking at the genital area in case they accidentally flash the screen and you find out. I believed her (and was strangely disappointed that she didn't know!)

Bellsx · 04/04/2020 10:31

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and the sonogropher asked me straight away if I wanted to find out which I did but it wasn't noted down on any of my paperwork.

toomuchteaandcake · 04/04/2020 11:01

Our sonographer asks at the end if we wanted to know and we said no. She said that's fine, I haven't looked, we don't look unless you ask. We did get a good potty shot tho tho I didnt see anything obvious either way, so I wonder if she did know. At one point she referred to either its or his whereas the rest of the time she said baby. That's me being a detective tho!

popcorndiva · 04/04/2020 11:04

We found out at 20w scan and the two scans we had after that, in the notes was ,'active male fetus'

sel2223 · 04/04/2020 11:07

I know from a private scan and 20 week scan that I'm having a girl but there's nothing in my notes. Just a disclaimer about how i was told the sex but it had been explained to me that it's not 100% accurate.

Delbelleber · 04/04/2020 11:14

They didn't make any notes at my scan. Said I didn't even need my folder.
