Ate wild garlic - sever diarrhea

I am 16 weeks pregnant and yesterday and day before ate A LOT of wild garlic. I thought or assumed it would be good for me like spinach. I've had really severe diarrhea today. Very bad. Can something like this damage the baby? I've since read online to avoid it ... But too late. I am cramping a lot.

You need to call your midwife or 111. Don't delay.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 28/03/2020 18:22

Please get checked straightaway.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 28/03/2020 18:23

How much is a lot?

Wolfiefan · 28/03/2020 18:25

Are you sure that’s what it was?
And yes. What’s a “lot”?

Soubriquet · 28/03/2020 18:27

Ring your midwife

ASNW5 · 28/03/2020 18:40

Did you wash it before eating it?

Elle12345678 · 28/03/2020 18:40

It was a big salads worth. I eat it every year so I know it was definitely the wild garlic ... The diarrhea started about 3-4 hours ago. Like water. It's a bit less runny now but still diarrhea. The 111 lines are swamped and I don't have an out of hours for my midwife

Are you sure you haven’t eaten lily of the valley, the leaves are similar?

Because wild garlic shouldn’t give you diahorrhea.

Elle12345678 · 28/03/2020 18:47

Yes sure. I took a good 24 hours for the diarrhea to start. It smelt and tasted like wild garlic.

And thats what I thought as I always eat it. But my stool was Extremely dark green almost black. So I think it has to be the wild garlic. I'm just getting cut off on the 111 number and midwives not back now till next week. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wild garlic often grows within bluebell woods. Is there any chance you ate bluebell leaves?

covid · 28/03/2020 18:56

The diarrhoea may not be related to the wild garlic, coronavirus can have gastric symptoms at the start, diarrhoea being one of those.

Do you feel ok otherwise?

BrooHaHa · 28/03/2020 19:08

Excessive garlic consumption can cause diarrhoea. Maybe it's just that?

slipperywhensparticus · 28/03/2020 19:14

When I was pregnant strawberries gave me diarrhoea as did scampi

You might just be having a dodgy tum due to being pregnant?

Get it checked just in case do you have a pregnancy unit in your town?

Elle12345678 · 28/03/2020 19:42

A positive - didn't realise but my midwife is available 8-8pm every day. She said as my partner are it too and he's fine, it sounds like I had an adverse reaction due to pregnancy - extra sensitive. She also said that if it was poison the reaction would have been straight away. She said to drink lots of fluids, eat something mild and if I still have it tomorrow to call. But that the baby will be fine and safe in there. I feel absolutely fine otherwise .... Have a sniffle but have had that since pregnant.

What did she say about the cramping?

Elle12345678 · 28/03/2020 22:59

She said that it's really hard to tell between stomach and baby cramps when you have sudden diarrhea. To take paracetamol and check in tomorrow but she wasn't worried. She said he's snug as a bug in there.

How are you now @Elle12345678?
Did you get better quickly?

HornungTheHelpful · 04/04/2021 21:02

@Elle12345678 Hope you are now happily ensconced with your one year old but this thread popped up on google when I searched for wild garlic and diarrhoea because ... I am 19 weeks pregnant and had exactly the same thing! Will never eat wild garlic again I don’t think!
