Hi everyone,

I’m just over 5 weeks pregnant (found out on Tuesday). For nearly the past 3 weeks (so virtually since conception) I have been having on and off period like cramps (before I found out i was pregnant i though it was AF coming on). In the last few days am having more painful cramps that last longer and are worse at night. I’m thinking it must be a bad sign but dont have any blood or spotting at the moment. My pregnancy test on Tuesday said 2-3 weeks and yesterday went to 3+, also had a very dark line on another one today but don’t know if that’s false reassurance.
I’m a worrier and cant help but think the worst. Any reassuring stories or is this the start of a MC?

For about the first 3 weeks after I realised I was pregnant at around 5 weeks I expected to find that I had started my period every time I went to the loo because of the period type cramps but he’s now 11 Smile Good luck with your pregnancy

OakTreeOwl · 13/03/2020 19:47

Yes, I had exactly this, with no bleeding. A few weeks of period-type cramps until I was about 12 weeks. All turned out fine.

There's a lot of stuff shifting around down there and expanding, so it will feel weird for a while. Take it easy

erised · 13/03/2020 19:48

Yep, I had horrible cramps that woke me up and almost made me pass out. Had them up until about 10 weeks. Was told by my midwife and EPU that it's normal unless accompanied by lots of bright red blood.

Am now 21+4 and having a healthy baby girl Smile

Congratulations Flowers

Yes, I did and had bleeding too. I now have a 5yo and a 16 month old. Wishing you all the best

Pumpkin108 · 13/03/2020 19:51

Thank you all so much. @erised congratulations.

Do you have any tips to ease the pain?

@Pumpkin108 paracetamol only I'm afraid. It did help with it.

Thank you!

YgritteSnow · 13/03/2020 20:07

Yes with all my pregnancies. It's completely normal. Everything stretching and getting bigger. Congratulations x

Pumpkin108 · 13/03/2020 20:13

Thanks hot water bottle and paracetamol for me. Finding it tough as I also have ulcerative colitis so get a lot of bowel and stomach pain already.

I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant and every now and then had these kind of cramps. Usually at night also. I read that drinking plenty of water can ease the cramps and it did actually help. I have about 2 litres a day of water and I don't really have cramps now. Worth a try. x

DressingGown87 · 13/03/2020 20:49

I get cramp too, all the way through from my BFP to now (8 weeks) it feels like I’m coming on my period. I find resting works, eating small meals more frequently. I was told it’s because of stretching, and quite normal.

Wanderer1 · 13/03/2020 20:58

I was told by EPU that I could take codine if they got really bad. Hope you feel better soon

NishaaS123 · 14/03/2020 10:40

I had horrible cramps aswell until 12 weeks then it was okay after that it's just the uterus stretching I am 20 weeks now and alls well xx

ClassicallyConditioned · 14/03/2020 10:46

Yes. Rising progesterone levels each month cause the womb lining to thicken and the side effect of this is cramps and other monthly symptoms . If you're not pregnant you then get your period, if you are then the womb lining, cramps and other symptoms remain and often grow stronger because the progesterone levels continue to rise.

This is why early pregnancy often feels like the period from hell

Pumpkin108 · 14/03/2020 14:49

@ClassicallyConditioned haha yes definitely feels like the period from hell! That makes me feel a little better.

Think I might book an early scan just to reassure myself but don't know if it's worth it?

I had the same pumpkin and still do now from 5 weeks and I’m now 7. An early scan in my eyes is worth it! It really reassured me and I saw my babies heart beat. I still worry everytime I get a cramp and I have lower back aches. So if you want an early scan go for it!

Pumpkin108 · 14/03/2020 15:18

@Littlebb2020 thanks! I just booked it for 2 weeks time when I'll be just over 7 weeks. Congratulations!

Hey, I had cramps really bad. No bleeding but cramps every single day for long periods of time. I’m now 16 weeks and a few days and still get them, it’s just everything growing ! Congratulations 💕💜💙

Pumpkin108 · 16/03/2020 14:57

@GaaaaarlicBread thanks for sharing your experience. Good to know I’m not the only one! Congratulations to you too! Wishing you all the best

Hi @Pumpkin108 I'm 6+1 and having been having these exact pains! I was really worried due to having a MMC in december, especially since all my symptoms had disappeared too!
I am booked in for a scan at EPU on wednesday to make sure everything is okay.
I have noticed that today I have had the pains less and I'm not sure if this is due to me drinking more water or what. I'm also not sure if some of the pains were linked to gas and bloating.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one going through this and also to read other people have been through the same and had healthy babies

Positivetime · 20/05/2020 20:33

@Pumpkin108 hi I’m not sure if this is still active but I was wondering how you were?
I’m 5 weeks now and have the exact same symptoms that you described in March. I have been told by my GP to book in for an early scan for next week. I hope you’re feeling ok now?

sel2223 · 20/05/2020 21:32

I had cramps around 4-6 weeks. I felt like AF was going to come at any minute so took me a while to believe I was actually pregnant.....then the morning sickness hit lol.
I'm now 28 weeks.

lettersbyowl · 20/05/2020 21:40

Yes I did... kept going to the loo every five mins thinking I would have started bleeding. It stopped at around 8/9 weeks? I'm 39 weeks now Smile

soulandsunshine · 20/05/2020 21:43

Yes, thought I was coming on my period. Bfp at 11dpo and continued to have cramps so bad I questioned taking painkillers. Cuddled a hot water bottle up until week 5. Pain less common now.
