Hair loss and Alopecia Areata

I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with alopecia areata (I also have Hashimoto's). My hair has started falling out since I got pregnant but I've now lost almost half of my hair.

I want to understand better if anyone had the same issue?
Have your hair returned after you gave birth? Did it stop falling out during pregnancy? How did you manage hair loss whilst pregnant? Given that you cannot use steroids while pregnant, what was your solution, did you go for a wig?

Any help would be much appreciated! x

Hi there

I have had alopecia areata since I was about 13 yearw old and have lost a couple of patches of hair since then but it always regrows.
I noticed a bald spot at around 28 weeks. Now it it has grown alot in the last month and im losing alot of hair in other areas as well. Im 36 weeks pregnant now and scared I will lose all of my hair.
How is your situation now? Has your hair stopped falling out?

Hello,

I don’t have good news I’m afraid.... I have lost all my hair, eyelashes, eyebrows - pretty much all hair on my body during pregnancy (alopecia universalis). I am due in 2 weeks so after I give birth, I hope things will get better but I‘m not too hopeful given the situation.
Your case might be different as it is for everyone with alopecia so I wouldn’t worry too much! Have you seen a dermatologist?

Sorry to hear, hopefully it will get better after you give birth or you can have some kind of treatment. Yes I have been to the dermotologist and have been using a topical steroid solution for a month now and she injected the biggest spot with some diluted steroids. Trying not to worry and thinking this is not the worst thing that can happen it is just hair after all. Good luck to you!
