Hi!

Just turned 13 weeks and now starting to look at buying baby things!!

I really don't mind buying second hand things but just wondered if there's things you shouldn't really buy second hand???

Some things are so expensive so like to save where I can.

If anyone has a check list of things to buy as no idea where to start haha.

Thanks

What you really want new:
cot mattress
car seat
bottle teats (though the bottles themselves can be second hand)

I can't remember much else that needed to be new, though others may well have other suggestions.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I got everything second hand apart from mattresses and bottles/dummies. There are some great deals to be found on very lightly used baby stuff.

Sorry - forgot to add we also got a new car seat!

This lists above are spot on and If you are in scotland you will get the baby box which can be used as a bed too so that saves some cash.
I think it's nice to have a special blanket or outfit to take them home in/ get them registered.
And as I breastfed I didnt even need bottles, you can get so many things that are like new second hand on marketplace/gumtree/ebay etc.

Getting a car seat second hand is ok if you know the history isn't it?
My sister is giving me hers as her baby will be moving to a bigger one, it was perfect timing.

TheAgeOfAquarius · 29/01/2020 11:49

@edin16 yes as long as you know it hasnt been in an accident (no matter how small) and not damaged during storage then yes totally fine!

I'd personally be happy buying anything second hand except for cot mattress, changing mat, pram and car seat. I'd also like to have a few vests, sleepsuits and blankets brand new, as well as cot sheets.

However that's just my own personal preference, the cot mattress and car seat with unknown history are the only actual danger-related ones that I know of, also please note that I breastfed and never used a dummy so I know zero about bottles and dummies!

Second hand things I have:

Sleeping bags
Cot
Crib
Baby bouncer
Swing
Jumperoo
Outfits for special occasions eg Christmas themed stuff as only gets worn for short periods

I'm pregnant with my third and I feel sick when I think of how much I've spent over the years on clothes, prams and other stuff. This time I've bought nearly everything I've needed second hand apart from bottles. I bought all my maternity clothes second hand as bundles on eBay etc. Loads of baby things are like brand new because they are hardly in them or for such a shortnperiod. Congratulations xx

Mattresses and car seats should be new but that’s really all, you can buy everything else second hand.

I find that always buying a new car seat is a waste. Immagine how many must be around unused?

I bought mattress for cot( but if it would have been from a friend I would have accepted if in good clean condition).

Most stuff can be second hand if you want so, you can find great quality for good price if patient to look for it.

Just an advice: don't trust always when people say excellent condition, but do ask in a text exact condition about it being clean etc, also ask more photos if bought on line. I had people saying great conditions and the things were bad and so dirty( i turned out, but knowing would have saved me a travel).

The second hand items we had were the following.
Cot
Car seat (knew the person well who had it before me).
Some clothes
Baby bath towels with hoods
We borrowed a steriliser
We also borrowed a bouncy chair
Borrowed a baby walker
Borrowed a sling
Borrowed baby monitor
Borrowed baby bath and bath seat
Play mat
