Gestational Diabetes - Meal Ideas?

Can anyone suggest some foolproof meal ideas for gestational diabetes please? Mainly dinners?

This is my second pregnancy where I've suffered and I don't seem to be able to tolerate the same foods this time round.

Seeded granary bread was my go to last time but this time round it's been sending my levels sky high, and potatoes are an absolute no go whereas last time I could get away with a few cheeky chips or half a jacketSad

Help please!

Hi,

I try to replace potatoes with squash, pasta with vegetable pasta and generally have low carb soup (without bread on the side).

Some recipes I use

  • Squash, Sage and Gruyere frittata
  • Bolognese with courgette spaghetti and parmesan
  • Chicken ceasar salad, with (a couple of!) sweet potato fries

Have you tried Burgen linseed bread? I find it much better than standard seeded.

I do ok with a few buttery new potatoes, or half a jacket with lots of meat and cheese. 50g (dry) whole meal pasta, or small handful of sweet potato fries. I do have to pair with lots of fat and protein though. I'm also loving the cauliflower hash browns from Sainsbo, I can get away with a couple of those no probs.

This is my second GD pregnancy too and I was on metformin by 7 weeks (diet controlled last time) so I feel your pain.

I couldn’t eat any bread or potatoes whatsoever
I had salads with cheese and apple
Heck sausages are ok because they are 97% meat
And I ate all the meat. All the cheese. And all the veg. Very monotonous. I had Greek yoghurt with tiny amount of berries and a load of nuts. Meals were rubbish but I knew it wouldn’t last forever.

Have a look on the Gestational Diabetes UK website and Facebook page - there are loads of great ideas and lots of support on there!

Join the Gestational Diabetes UK Facebook group. There is a website too with meal ideas and recipes. The Facebook group is lovely, full of helpful people. I've had GD twice but only discovered the group in my second pregnancy, it really is a life saver!

I find a good chicken dinner with loads of veg keeps mine down :)
