I don't know if anyone can help, but I am extremely worried & can't get hold of my Dr til tomorrow.

Approx 2-3 weeks ago,I had an attack of Labrinthytis & was so unstaedy on my feet that I was worried about falling whilst holding 12 month old DD.I have had this before & was prescribed Stemetil.I did think to myself before I took the tablets-'what if I'm pregnant?'but to be honest I thought there was little chance I was & told myself to think about the wellbeing of the child I had, rather than thinking about what might be.

I took 2 tablets,as directed & felt better after abn hour or so,so didn't need to take any more.

Last Friday I got a positive pregnancy test & now I am so worried that it will cause problems or harm the baby in some way.I can't remember exactly when I took the tablets, but it would have to have been either arond the time of conception or the week after.

Can anyone help?
TIA

Mirage, can't you phone your surgery and tell them how worried you are. I am sure that a doctor would ring you back today to put your mind at rest.

I don't know about the medication you took, but FWIW I was on 3 different types of medication when I became pregnant (unplanned) with ds2. They were all contraindicated during pregnancy, one being particularly worrisome. I was taking them for 8 weeks before I realised I was pregnant.

I too was beside myself with worry, but GP put my mind at rest and also checked with a pharmacologist who knew a lot about this paricular range of drugs.

Everything was fine.

DON'T sit worrying - ring the surgery.

There's a site here which says that tests haven't been carried out in pregnant women. There've been tests in animals but they are generally quite meaningless tbh.

If it was me I'd take this as good news - remember lots of us do things we shouldn't (eg smoke, get very drunk) in early pregnancy and our babies are fine. Also often the things that you would think would cause a lot of damage to aan embryo cause none - apparently babies are unaffected by their mothers taking heroin in preg (but they are affected by smoking. I thought this was quite unfair in the scheme of things when I read it). And 2 tablets of anything isn't much.

Just consulted my BNF and it says under antipsychotics that the trimester of risk is the third one when if used here extrapyramidal effects are sometimes seen in babies. I can't see anywhere where it says avoid in trimester one.

In addition, prochlorperazine (Stemetil) is the second line treatment used in the treatment of pregnancy-induced nausea in first trimester so I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Do as Twogorgeousboys says though and call the GP with your concern, I'm sure they'd call back. Otherwise, do you have the packet of Stemetil still because you could always call the manufacturer - they have medical information depts you can call.

HTH. Try not to worry, if it's used in pregnancy anyway then it must be fine.

Hugs.

Mirage, please don't worry. I suffer from this too (it's horrid isn't it) and carry Stemetil everywhere with me. Same thing happened to me when I was a couple of weeks pregnant with ds2. The doctor reasuured me that there wasn't a problem and all was fine.

Please call your doctor to reassure yourself but do not worry yourself about it till then.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

Mirage

My doctor prescribed Stemetil for severe morning sickness when I was 7 weeks pregnant. I took it without ill-effect.

Hope this makes you feel a bit better

Thank you sooo much for responding so fast. You were all absolutely right!

I just called & spoke to another GP,as mine is out until tomorrow & she said that it shouldn't cause a problem as it is prescribed for MS,but not to take any more.

I was cross with myself for taking it,because I normally don't even take paracetamol as I don't like taking drugs. But as Kayleigh says,Labrinthytis is horrible.

Anyway, once again, mumsnetters have saved the day .I'll go away & find something else to worry about now.
