Have a cold - can I drink LemSip?

I’m coming down with a cold - I have a runny nose, sore throat and generally just feel rundown and horrid.

A hot LemSip is usually my go-to solution in this situation - but is it ok when you’re pregnant? I’m 20 weeks in case that is relevant...

What does it say on the leaflet on the packet?

PullingMySocksUp · 15/12/2019 08:54

No decongestants at all I’m afraid.

You can inhale menthol but I think that’s it. And have some paracetamol.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 15/12/2019 08:56

No, most of the different types contain decongestants and aren’t suitable in pregnancy. Take a couple of paracetamol and make yourself a cup of something soothing, it’ll have pretty much the same effect.

It tells you on the packet that you can’t?

bionicnemonic · 15/12/2019 08:58

I’d even be wary of paracetamol after recent research...I’ll be back with links (made myself unpopular about this before)

PickleSarnie · 15/12/2019 08:58

Boots do (or did not so long ago at least) an own brand traditional lemsip that only has paracetamol as am active ingredient. So that would be fine. Most of the others these days also have decongestants in them though.

I haven’t actually got a packet in front of me, but was going to pop out and buy some. It sounds like it’s a no go though! Maybe I’ll make a hot ribena instead?

No lemsip I'm afraid. I was told hot honey and lemon and paracetamol If really needed for lowering temperature. Also steam to help you breathe (did nothing for me)

Good luck. My cold ended up in a horrific chest infection which I needed antibiotics for so please fret and rest too x

TheClausSeason · 15/12/2019 09:02

I too would be careful with the paracetamol- only if 100% necessary, as PP said.

Boymummy3 · 15/12/2019 11:39

I've had colds on and off during this pregnancy and been told only things that are suitable are paracetamol and jakemans sweets for your throat. Everything else is a no go. You could try hot water with lemon in though or put your head over a bowl of hot water too see if that helps x

TheClausSeason · 15/12/2019 11:51

Ooh, for your throat, melt a spoon of honey in the microwave, then add a couple of spoons of lemon juice and take like a cough syrup. Delicious and soothing for the throat.
