Anxiety during pregnancy

I’ve been seriously struggling with the symptoms of the first trimester and for some unknown reason last night anxiety kicked in whereby my heart is beating a million beats per minute and barely slows down. I’m not worried about anything but am struggling to leave the sofa/bed at the moment. Think I need to see my gp tomorrow because I feel so on edge can’t relax or sleep. Anyone else had similar? I don’t really have any history of anxiety or depression.

It's very common to suffer with anxiety during pregnancy. Your hormones are going wild and you feel ill all the time (not a nice combo). The best thing to do to relax and slow your heart rate is breathing techniques. I find this one works best for me -

Lie on your back with your hand lightly placed on your stomach. Breathe in through your nose to the count of 3/4 (whichever is most comfortable). Whilst your are inhaling, focus on your stomach rising and expanding. Then, breathe out through your mouth for the count of 7/8 and feel your stomach drop again.

This is the reverse of hyperventilating and forces your heart rate to return to normal. Also, focusing on counting your breathes stops your mind from wandering and thinking about other things. It may take a few minutes of doing this for you to start to notice the effects but persevere as it does work.

Do also speak to your midwife/GP. They will be able to discuss your anxiety and arrange counselling if necessary and if that's what you want x

@GR91 did you see your GP?

Thank you for your message. It actually calmed down once I spoke to my manager and agreed some time off, it must of been that without me realising ! X
