taking antibiotics when pregnant

Hi all, i'm 15 weeks pregnant and i've just been prescribed a 5 day course of Flucloxacillin as i have an infected cyst.

I'm quite worried about taking the antibiotics in case there are any side effects for the baby - does anyone have any experience of taking antibiotics whilst pregnant?

I took them around 5 weeks due to a bad UTI and had no problems.

I had them in my first pregnancy in both the first and second trimester. She was absolutely fine throughout the pregnancy and when born.

The risks of an untreated bacterial infection are usually higher than the risks of taking antibiotics in pregnancy

Many antibiotics, including Flucloxacillin, have been used in pregnancy for a long time and are known to be safe. An untreated bacterial infection, on the other hand, can be a real risk to the pregnancy. I’m a GP and would certainly take antibiotics in pregnancy myself if I felt they were needed.

Thank you for your responses - i'm a worrier so i'm probably just overthinking it! the cyst has ruptured and seems to be on the mend (compared to yesterday) so i might play it by ear and if its not any better tomorrow, then start my course of antibiotics.

Presumably you told the doctor you were pregnant so they chose a safe antibiotic? Have a look at the side effects leaflet enclosed with the tablets. I think an infection would be more likely to cause damage to you/the baby than prescribed antibiotics.

A relative took antibiotics during pregnancy for an infection. Years later her dentist told her that her DCs teeth were hyper plastic which I think means they have a thin outer layer and that this was most likely down to her taking antibiotics during pregnancy. However, if she hadn’t taken the antibiotics then the affects of the infection could have been worse.

I took those specific antibiotics during early pregnancy and my little girl is fine. Infected cysts are horrible hope it’s on the mend soon!

It can affect the development of baby teeth I think but the adult ones are fine even if that happens.

I have kidney issues (so recurrent utis) and have to take daily long term antibiotics including throughout both of my pregnancies. No issues whatsoever. Untreated utis- or any infection actually- are much more dangerous to you and the baby than taking the antibiotics.

I wouldn't postpone taking antibiotics for a ruptured cyst. Antibiotics are perfectly fine to be taken during pregnancy otherwise they wouldn't be prescribed. I had to take antibiotics with my 2nd pregnancy due to a kidney infection hes absolutley fine. X

The doctor who prescribed the antibiotics will have known which are safe in pregnancy. You have nothing to worry about as long as you take them.

Thank you everyone! i definitely feel reassured. I'll start the course in the morning.
