Early pregnancy, 5mm empty sac is this normal?

Hey all, to cut a long story short I fell pregnant with the coil in so needed a scan to find out where it was (its vanished into thin air apparently) they did find a 5mm empty gestational sac in the right place, which I'm told makes me around 5 weeks and I have to go back in 2 weeks to find out if the pregnancy is viable. What I'd like to know is has anyone been in a similar situation? or does anyone know if this info sounds correct for the amount of weeks I should be? I'm 40 and my youngest is 12 so this is a big surprise but I also dont want to get my hopes up if things arent going to work out and the next 2 weeks are going to drive me crazy waiting 🙈

It's normal for five weeks I think. How did your coil vanish?? How are they certain it's not still up there somewhere?

Dizzy201 · 22/10/2019 14:51

Ok thanks. I had a scan and they cant find it, they think it must have fallen out though I dont see how I wouldn't have seen it

Goodness, my coil fell out & you would 100% notice I’m sure! For a little while I had the feeling like when you don’t put a tampon up high enough, then a really noticeable scratching/pinching sensation before I did some investigating & found if half hanging out!

I’ve no experience with early scans I’m afraid but wanted to wish lots of luck, I hope everything is OK!

I'd try and get another scan if I were you, OP, or ideally a camera up there. I don't think you should accept the, 'Oh, it must've fallen out as we can't find it' line. If you've not noticed it come out surely it must be embedded up there somewhere?

Also, I think you should post again with a heading along the lines of 'mirena gone AWOL' in health or chat so that people who've had a similar experience can be directed to your thread and offer their perspective.

My friend 'lost' her coil and became pregnant. After 40 weeks the baby was duly born with the coil held tightly in his fist! This was an old fashioned copper coil though not mirena

I had a scan at five weeks and they couldn't see anything so had to go back to check. All was fine and my dd is now 17 x

Dizzy201 · 22/10/2019 19:20

Oh dear, I wonder if I need another scan and they could have missed it...

Oh wow just seen the message about the coil in hand, mine was the copper coil as well! Nice to know it can work out. Fingers crossed all is normal on my next scan 🤞

My mum got pregnant with a coil in. Said baby is now 36!

Just wanted to update, I went back for the scan and there was a 11mm sac with yolk and no fetal pole putting me around 5-6 weeks (dates dont add up now from when test was done) so I have to go back again on Monday, pregnancy symptoms seem to be easing and I dont think it's going to be good news but 🤞fingers crossed all goes well
