Omeprazole & stomach ache?!

Has anyone taken Omeprazole and experienced quite severe stomach as a side effect?

I started it yesterday & have spent today curled up in a ball of pain! It’s lower abdominal pain but feels very different to the aches & pains related to a growing uterus of which I’ve had plenty!

I was put on Omeprazole due to vomiting a very minor amount of blood, my doctor thinks I had a very minor tear of my stomach and I’ve had some upper abdo pain associated. This pain has now gone but bam, agony in my lower stomach! Sad

I'm on omeprazole for heartburn but never experienced this. Given what you've said I would go back to the Dr I think.

@Bol87 I had it to help but not for pregnancy related and felt like my stomach was burning! I will never have it ever again after that! I would speak to your gp as it is in my medical records that I am allergic to it now.

I would go back to the doctor. That drug is not meant for long term use as it can lead to dementia. Have you been taking it long?

I’ve taken it for two days, so I won’t panic Grin I’ve had lanzoprazole previously for a stomach ulcer and took that for 3 months with no side affects. I figured they were very similar drugs ..

My mum has taken Omeprazole because of steroid medication for years, surely it must be fairly safe for her consultant to continue to prescribe it?!

I will see if it continues over the next day or so & then go back.. what a joy this pregnancy has been so far 😩

The link with dementia wasn't proven and subsequent studies showed conflicting results, there were a lot of other factors at play. I'm sure taking them in the short term (for pregnancy related heartburn in my case) is not going to make much difference.

It didn't suit me at all. It caused pain and diarrhoea for me.

I was put on it for chronic gastritis and stomach ulcers but hated it. It made my stomach so swollen and bloated. It was constantly sore and uncomfortable so I asked the doctor for an alternative and he put me on 300mg ranitidine which is much better. It lessens the acid instead of blocking it completely though and most people on it just use 150mg. Safe in pregnancy though.

Ive been on it for years, so that may not be true, as a lot of people get it prescribed for long term use Confused my friemd is also on it.
