Unprotected sex after vascectomy

My OH had the snip 2 months ago and after a drunken evening we thought it would be ok to have unprotected sex! However, the next day I felt it was a bit mad and now I am either going crazy or thinking I am going to have baby number 5! Even though we decided for OH to have the snip, I am feeling surprisingly ok about the idea of having another baby. We have 4, the eldest is 8 and the youngest is 2. Not sure why I have posted this, I just feel like I need to talk to someone about it! OH hasn’t been back to have himself tested, that’s why this is all a mystery! Last night I had to get up for a pee in the night, twice! That has ALWAYS been my very first sign of being pregnant. Has anyone been through something similar? Thanks ladies x

I haven't been through anything similar but if he hasn't yet had a negative sperm test of course you could be pregnant.

At least it doesn't sound like it would be a disaster Smile

I hope whichever way this goes works out ok for you, OH and your children (however many that may turn out to be...)

Isn't the whole point of a vasectomy to be able to have unprotected sex? Or is there a window where it's still not safe?

LaMarschallin · 28/08/2019 08:56

Or is there a window where it's still not safe?
Yes there is.
Which is usually explained before the operation.

Hence the need for a sperm test afterwards.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am feeling very strangely calm about it all. It’s very weird as we were so sure we were complete, hence the vascectomy. I didn’t want to go to get the morning after pill (my gut feeling said no) and now I feel it’s my last chance to see if life is going to take another twist! Bonkers I know! X

Yes the docs say use protection until they test for swimmers! Normally around 8 weeks x

And the morning after I checked my ovulation calendar and low and behold I was ovulating right then. Can I keep this thread open and update on it? It feels a relief to talk about it x

Not bonkers.
Sometimes a vasectomy or (in women) tubal ligation can feel scarily final.

If you both took the - albeit small - risk and also didn't get the MAP, maybe it had felt a bit that way to you?

Obviously I don't know, I'm just speculating.

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2019 09:02

There is a period after the operation in which live sperm are still kicking about in the tubes (can you tell I am not a dr?😊). This is why you have to have sperm tests afterwards. I think DH went every month for 3 months.

scaevola · 28/08/2019 09:04

How long it takes for someone to test clear after vasectomy varies considerably.

Usually it's no more than 16 weeks (it's both passage of time and number f ejaculations)

So yes, as early as 8-10 weeks and pregnancy is definitely a possibility. They say over half the 'fail' rate of vasectomy is down to abandoning contraception before the 'all clear'

MazB1985 · 28/08/2019 09:04

Did your OH still have swimmers when he did the first two tests??

OP posts:
LaMarschallin · 28/08/2019 09:30

I don't presume to know about any other poster here and their swimmers, but there's a reason the NHS do repeated tests until a negative one. It's because there could be some swimmers present further down the line after the vas have been tied further up.

Repeated tests would be a bit of a waste of money and effort (on everybody's behalf: HCP's and OH's) otherwise.

Thanks for all your replies. I think it’s going to be a waiting game now. Today I’ve gone through waves of thinking it could happen to no way, surely I won’t be pregnant! Suddenly every little symptom can be magnified (in my eyes) x

When will you test OP?

MazB1985 · 29/08/2019 07:15

Not sure when he will get tested. I will get on at him to make an appointment!

Family friends it was 12 months until he got the all clear 😳

happyasasandboy · 29/08/2019 07:30

I am pregnant. I got pregnant about 5 months after my husbands vasectomy, despite being on the pill.

My husband had a test at 3 months and was told there was a very small number of viable sperm left. He's been for another check at 6 months but I'm not sure if the result (seems kind of irrelevant since I'm pregnant).

We thought being on the pill would be enough to protect us during the wait for the all clear on the vasectomy. We were wrong.

icecreamsundae32 · 29/08/2019 07:41

It depends on the number of ejaculations since the op. The more times, the quicker the viable sperm are gone so it depends on that rather than being all clear in 2 months or 6 months.
My husband had his in feb last year, he went for his check in June and was all fine on the leaflet it said he had to ejaculate at least 20 times before the test so in theory you could be safe very quickly if he ejaculated every day lol

DrDreReturns · 29/08/2019 07:48

I needed two consecutive clear samples before I was safe. My first sample still had sperm in it. It took a few months.

HillRunner · 29/08/2019 07:52

The follow up for a vasectomy involves giving a semen sample, which is checked to see if the procedure has been successful. The doctor will confirm when it is safe to have unprotected sex. Surely this was discussed when he had the op?

DrDreReturns · 29/08/2019 07:58

Yes I was told I had to give samples to get the all clear when I had the op.

ShowOfHands · 29/08/2019 08:04

DH got the all clear on his first sample and he hadn't ejaculated once between the vasectomy and the test so occasionally, it just works.

You need to do a pregnancy test.

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2019 08:28

Not sure when he will get tested. I will get on at him to make an appointment!

That sounds like a good plan!
It's odd he wasn't given an appointment for a test post-op. That's the usual policy I think.

Anyway, hope it all works out.

MazB1985 · 29/08/2019 09:18

Thanks everyone, I will be waiting to test in a few weeks time.

Hey, not sure if this is still open, found this when searching for information as my husband had a vasectomy 2 months ago and we have had Unprotected sex, so im just wondering on the possibility of pregnancy, were you pregnant?
