Tiny baby clothes?

Does everyone buy tiny baby clothes? Or will they be fine in newborn to begin with?
I'm worried I'll buy loads of tiny baby clothes outfits, then baby will be too big for them! But is it worth having even just a couple of things?

For context, I'm only 5ft, DP about 5ft 5" he is extremely, extremely slim, as are all of his family. I'm not overweight in the slightest but I'm short and stumpy.
I've heard of tiny woman having giant babies, so I know our size is nothing to go by generally. But I'm hoping baby will be of regular weight and not end up having a 10lbs baby! I'm terrified of birth as it is, let alone if its bigger to push out Envy

Anyway. Should I invest in some tiny baby necessities, or just stick with newborn and upwards?

So my little lady was born last night at 38+2 and the growth scan Tuesday was way off! Not the 6lb13 they predicted but only 5lb10! I did happen to have 2 tiny babygros in my bag (I’d forgotten about) which she has already worn both so when my family come to visit I’m going to have to send them out to get more tiny baby clothes! Even the tiny baby vests my mum had bought her are too long 😂
Just goes to show that even when they expect you to have a certain sized baby they can get it totally wrong x

My son was 6,11 and he needed tiny baby clothes for the first 2-3 weeks. Normal newborn stuff drowned him, he was skinny and long.

Rarfy · 02/08/2019 13:40

First size and upto 1 month I think were smaller than newborn. Did my dd who was 6lb13oz. Probably a bit too big but by time washed and tumbled and baby puts weight on they soon fit. Lasted her ages and all.

PetraRabbit · 02/08/2019 14:48

My baby was predicted to be around 6 pounds and internet advice said buy newborn and 0-3 as tiny baby would be wrong (similar to advice above). DH and I were both small babies. He was heavier than estimated at under 6 and a half pounds but absolutely needed tiny baby clothes. Babies of the same weight can actually vary in size and proportions. If you're unsure or worried about budget I would buy some footless babygros in tiny baby size as the footed clothes can be restrictive as they grow. I hated the newborn babygros on my newborn- they just swamped him in material. I'm having another and will buy a month's worth of tiny baby clothes. As for buying 0-3, I ended up with summer clothes in 0-3 in October (was 3 or 4 months before fitting into them) which was such a waste of money. I exchanged what I could!

Your height means nothing as I learnt 11 weeks ago! I'm 5ft, DH is 5.11 I'm a size 6-8 and hubby is also very slim. I had a 8.6lbs baby at 40+4 and she went straight into one month clothing so my new baby and tiny baby all got wasted! But I donated them to the NICU. X

xJune88 · 02/08/2019 14:54

Sorry! Just seen you know height means nothing didnt read properly 🤦🏼‍♀️x

I’ve only bought newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3. My baby is on track on 50th centile to be around 8lbs.
What does your growth chart indicate? Tiny baby is really only for prem or where you know they will be very small.

Hellosunshine30 · 02/08/2019 15:10

Everyone told us not to buy newborn, just get 0 to 3 months. I wish I didn't listen. He is so small even for 8lb 3!the 0 to 3 absolutely drown him lol. Get some newborn stuff, trust me x

stucknoue · 02/08/2019 15:14

Most babies only need newborn, I sent my mum out to buy tiny baby size because she was unexpectedly small

starfishcoffee · 02/08/2019 17:49

I just brought a mix of newborn, up to 1m and 0-3m. I had a small bump but I felt like it was better he was in something oversized than too small - DS was born 7lbs14oz so not a small baby! He fitted in nearly everything perfectly. But sizes vary. Some newborn stuff he wore until he was 3 months. Some 0-3m he only wore for the first month or so.

TowerRavenSeven · 02/08/2019 20:14

Both my dh and I are short and slim. I got all newborn things and had to go shopping the day after I got home! Even preemie sleepwear was huge on him. He was 5 lbs 12 oz and full term.

Bebelicious · 02/08/2019 20:17

I'm 5ft4 and mine was close to 10 poundsGrin. I would say don't bother with newborn, buy the 0-3 months, doesn't matter if slightly big initially

Heyha · 02/08/2019 20:19

My DD came out at 6lb 10 and I found initially the newborn stuff we had was a bit too big. Got a few bits of tiny baby and she wore them for all of s week before she got too long but I've got them packaged up for future use. As PP have said if your measurements are leaning towards smaller (though no guarantees!) maybe just get a pack of vests and a pack of sleepsuits from the supermarket, you can always take them back and swap if you end up with a baby that fits newborn from day 1.

Heyha · 02/08/2019 20:21

She's now 5 weeks old and 8 lb 9, still quite happily fitting some newborn/first size depending on where it's from- some newborn stuff only goes up to 50cm/7lb but John Lewis goes up to about 9lb, both as 'newborn'.

SinkGirl · 02/08/2019 20:24

Just get newborn. My twins were early and very small and tiny baby clothes were way too big, but they were in incubators initially anyway so plenty of time to get preemie clothes. Newborn is fine for most babies - better a bit big than too small

LatteLove · 02/08/2019 20:24

I just bought newborn as I am massive (fat) and H isn’t svelte either so assumed that they would be snug...my baby was only 6lb odds (a week late) so we needed some tiny baby. It was no hassle just to get someone to pick us some up once he was born. He was in them for a few weeks.

firstimemamma · 02/08/2019 20:29

Best to have a few bits in tiny, newborn and 0-3m imo & hospital bag outfits in these 3 sizes too.

My niece was born needing to wear tiny baby for the first few weeks - newborn stuff was too big and she was born roughly near her due date & healthy.

The parents hadn't bothered with tiny baby during the pregnancy and when niece was born they had one outfit that was a gift that fitted her and had to go panic shopping! This could be you unless you prepare!

My tiny baby stuff gathered dust as ds was born weighing nearly 9 lb but at least I felt prepared!

Spam88 · 02/08/2019 20:42

I wouldn't bother with tiny baby, it's really for unusually small babies. If you do need them then someone can pop to a supermarket and buy them for you.

I wouldn't get too carried away with newborn either, just in case you end up with a big one. Although it's worth checking out the weight on newborn/first size clothes as it varies massively between shops (e.g. Asda is 10lb, Tesco is 7.5lb).

Byebyefriend · 02/08/2019 20:49

I'm 5'2, my newborns didn't fit in newborn clothes ever. They went into up to 1 month clothes for a couple of weeks but 0-3 would of been fine too. I'd buy a babygrow in newborn and some up to 1 month. You can always order online for others to pick up or get delivered if baby is small.

MollysMummy2010 · 02/08/2019 21:21

My dd was 4.4lb and tiny baby swamped her!

LeslieYep · 02/08/2019 21:27

My 2 dd's were 8lb5 (12 days over) and 7lb9 (1 day early). So good weights, yet came out so so small.
My DM had to nip out to get some tiny baby and first size clothes for them! My 5 week old is just in newborn size now.
I'm 5'3 and DH is 6ft, but I guess we just make muscly babies!

You don't know what you'll get, so a couple of smaller bits, just in case, some newborn, and up-to 1 mo should see you through

SinkGirl · 02/08/2019 22:29

If anyone does need preemie clothes, Asda do fantastic ones which are really good value :)

One of my twins didnt fit into tiny baby until he was 2 months old (they were only five weeks early)! It’s impossible to tell. However, newborn size in most places is up to approx 7.5lb so most babies will be in that range. If I remember rightly, the tiny baby stuff is around the 5lb mark so way too small for most babies.
