Right shoulder pain - anyone else?

I'm exactly 35 weeks with MCDA twins, and for days I've had a constant ache in my right shoulder. It doesn't go away when I lie down, though I had it earlier in my pregnancy and lying down used to help.

I assume this is because of the weight of my bump but has anyone else experience this? Any tips for relief?

I'm already on paracetamol and having loads of rest

Hi OP - I've not experienced it myself though I did read shoulder pain on a list of symptoms for something (though can't remember what - sorry!! Unhelpful...) Don't want to alarm you but maybe give your MW a call?

RNBrie · 25/07/2019 12:54

Shoulder pain can be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy but not at 35 weeks Grin

SunshineSophia · 25/07/2019 13:33

@RNBrie - maybe thats what I'm thinking of! My mistake!! 🙈😋

I had it around 30 weeks, and tennis elbow - very weird. I read its just something to do with the relaxin.

I was with a midwife on Monday to rule out ectopic and she advised that shoulder pain can be a sign of bleeding internally, but just ectopic so best to get checked although it's likely nothing and just another lovely side effect of being pregnant! Good luck

Cosmogirl86 · 25/07/2019 16:26

I guess it's just one of the many things that we need to put up with in pregnancy!

I'm sure I had shoulder pain quite alot when I was pregnant my baby girl is 10 weeks old and healthy. I'd ask midwife just incase though xx

@Cosmogirl86 it's not common but right shoulder pain may be referred from the liver, which can be affected by pre-eclampsia.

This happened to me.

Please don't panic as it might not be related - but I would strongly advise getting checked ASAP.

I see my consultant on Tuesday so I'll bring it up then!

I do feel rough today, but it's probably the heat

If you feel rough and keep on having the shoulder pain, I strongly, strongly advise getting medical advice before next Tuesday.

If something is wrong, things could escalate very quickly.

I had pre-eclampsia, which was missed, which caused liver failure, and was very nearly fatal. Hopefully your pain is not connected... but it is possible.

Did you read the medical advice from the pre-eclampsia website that I posted above, specifically in relation to right shoulder pain?

Pain in this area should be taken very seriously; do not dismiss it and go to bed. Call your health professional immediately.

I would definitely get it checked out. But I also had this two days before I went into labour...can't remember whether the midwife said something about trapped wind or something else but she said it was very often the start of things so hopefully baby would be here soon (I was walking around at 2am in tears!)
Hope everything's ok.

I have no other signs of pre eclampsia though. No swelling or headaches, and my vision is fine. As I'm carrying MCDA twins by BP and urine get checked fortnightly and they've been fine every time. I'm also on 75mg aspirin to try and avoid it.

My bump is very hard and sore, and discharge has increased (sorry if tmi) so who know. Maybe my babies have decided to choose their own birthday rather than wait for the section booked for 12 days!

Any update @Cosmogirl86 ? Did you get checked out X

Cosmogirl86 · 31/07/2019 15:48

Apologies for not replying earlier, things have been crazy!

The day after my post my waters went and I now have two healthy baby twin boys!

I think my shoulder pain was sign of labour
